Would This Burn My Bridge Early???

Unread postby Stuart » Mon Sep 27, 2010 7:08 am

I will be hunting in a swamp that is very think for the opening evening for my first hunt. (forget about the yellow ring)

If I go around 70 yards in to where I need to be to get on a specific trail, would this burn my bridge? I could hunt this area lightly, and change things up often?

Should I start off by going in further every night and see how it goes or stick to my plan?

I do not want to go in deep then have to go back the next few hunts and stay by the edge because my scent will be left.

Thanks,
Stuart

Stuart, if you haven't scouted the area previously and located potential buck bedding areas... work those transition lines while playing the wind and potential bedding areas you believe may exist from the photo. I would only penetrate as far as where I locate fresh large buck sign entering or exiting an area before setting up. If its a bust, the next day move further in or along the transition lines and repeat the preceeding criteria- when you find fresh sign set up (afternoon hunts).

Your photo looks like it has a lot of potential for bedding- I especially like those beaver dams and ponds on the upper left side and the high ground areas next to them. 8-)

In this case, by transition lines do you mean where the river cuts through the swamp. Or do you mean close to the edge of the swamp?

Thanks,
Stuart

Both. Walking the edge of the water may or may not be possible, but if so you can use the wind to blow your scent across the water and have it impact the area of least concern to your hunt. Without prior scouting its hard to predict what all that interior area on your photo contains for bedding and travel.

I could do this because almost all the time the wind will blow right in my face. I will see how things have changed on my first hunt or see where the deer activity is from sight and sound. I do have other places to go on the property so I will hunt accordingly.

Thanks for your help,
Stuart
