Short hunt this Saturday what do you think.

Unread postby Swampthing » Wed Sep 22, 2010 4:56 pm

I can only hunt until 4 p.m. this saturday, kinda dissapointing. But it,s my Dad,s retirement party so gotta go.
I was thinking about hunting my island spot ,hopeing mabey I,ll get some daytime movement with it,s seclusion(boat acces only).I posted this spot earlier and got some direction from Dan. Only got to do a quick scout this summer.I found a massive scrape towards the middle and a ton of huge dropping along the west side .The whole island is covered with oaks ,so mabey.Don,t wanta screw it up too much but itching to go in.
Any ideas on a set-up.I,m a little worried about going in blindly with the boat in darkness and setting up in darkness.Would I be better off waiting till first light and set-up quitely for some action.Or wait till mid morning .
Just not sure how too attack this one.

I personally wouldn't burn one of my good spots until I had a chance to hunt it right until dark this time of year. In early season I'm not sure how much mid day movement your going to see. The first hunt of the season at a spot is one of your best chances of tagging one, so I usually want to wait until I the time is right and then hunt it. Just my $.02.

It's better too hunt than not too.

You need more than one spot, then it's less of a problem.

x2. One option that you may consider is going in Friday PM, and doing a scout/hunt to make sure the sign you saw is still active and exactly where it is. Set up and hunt it that PM until dark. Leave bright eyes or reflective ties to that spot on the way in or out. Saturday AM, the spot will be fresh in your mind. You can easily find your way back in and do an early AM hunt. Andrae D’Acquisto claims to use this tactic (PM then AM hunt) often to kill big bucks.

Save it for a full evening hunt, it soudns like a great spot, I would be too scared to mess it up on a partial sit. Still get out in the woods but maybe hunt for some doe's.

I agree , no point in burning a spot just because you are itching to go out.......hunt another spot or don't go until you can devote an entire evening sit.

buck bedding hunts are for evenings...

i would never wait on midday movement this early in the season... and going by boat in the dark will turn into a problem...

I think its a good choice for you to wait to hunt it to do it correctly. But Good luck when you do finally get to dive into the island looks awesome.
