Deer Repellant / Plot Saver

Unread postby Hill Hunter » Wed Jun 30, 2010 8:29 pm

I know this topic has been addressed before, in fact I think I brought it up, but can't find it back. Wondering if anyone has experimented with a plot saver / deer repellant?

I see that a few bigger hunting names have products out, but they are pricey. I tried using a product called Liquid Fence and going cheap with fiberglass stakes and clips from Fleet Farm and ribbon from a fabric store. Just put it around a food plot last weekend, but havent checked it to see if its keeping the deer out.

I believe Dan said Andrae was using a deer repellant system. Do you know what liquid or repellant he is using and if he really believes in it?

Andrea is using a set up almost exactly as you described with the liqued fence poles and ribbon. Can't be sure if its the same brand... He said every so often he has to refresh it, and occasionally a deer gets in there anyway, but overall it worked pretty good...

I have used the plot saver and it seems to work good if you have it up before the deer have had a taste of whats in the food plot. Otherwise they seem keep using the plot even with it up. Even if you get it up early on they get in once in a while, but they don't seem to eat much. I'm not sure, but I suspect the smell may make them feel nauseated. Interesting how they don't keep coming back if they didn't get used to feeding there before putting the plot saver up, but they will come back if they did.

I haven't used it, but I believe that the best product out there for keeping deer out is the Gallagher Food Plot Protector Fence. It's a solar powered electric fence that when set up right works awesome. It's reasonably priced and you don't have to keep buying solution to put on a ribbon which I think is kind of a pain. If I ever own a piece of land again I will have one of these.

Here is a little info on it.

I'd guess you are right about the liquid making the deer nautious, I was pretty much gagging while mixing the concentrate. I wouldn't recommend applying the liquid hungover.

Anyway, part of our plot will be un-"fenced," so if anyone is interested, I can post pics of the results. I also found a craft store in CA online, where the ribbon is 1/4 of the price of the celebrity stuff and is the exact same thing. Maybe Dan could put his name on it and market it! :D
