Dead Deer or so you thought

Unread postby PEAKRUT » Thu Apr 15, 2010 9:22 pm

Ive never have shot a deer seen it go down and walked up to it only to have it jump up and scare the out of me yet.
Do any of you have any good so you thought it was dead stories to share?
I did have once where my brother shot a fine 8 pointer and during the tracking job walk up to this bush and he was laying on the otherside. I had no clue he was there until he jumped up and scared the living chit out of me. It was about 8PM and plenty dark when we were looking for him.

Ha,ha, is that why on these hunting shows you see the hunter walk up ever so carefully, & poke the deer with the end of his gun barrel ? I'm with you, never had it happen... I have seen it where the deer is injured & laying down, but still has its head up looking around tho...

Good friend, James, shot a heavy 8 pointer on public land during opening morning of the 2005 gun season. He walked up to the deer very excitedly, as it was his first nice buck. Leaning his gun up to a tree, he reached down and grabbed the rack and lifted the head. . . And was in for the surprise of his life. That deer started shaking its head so violently, I'm just glad he didn't get gored by the way he described it.

I shot one of my first deer at last light and came back in the middle of the night with another guy to track it. When we got to her she was sitting in some thick stuff looking up at us with nothing but a front shoulder leg injury....kinda sucked because all I brought with me was a flashlight and a gutting knife :(

I shot a 130in 8 point on Xmas Eve of 05 I believe. I was shooting downhill and didnt take the angle into consideration. I hit him where I wanted to but it busted his shoulder without hitting his vitals. Well we tracked him in the snow for miles upon miles. Well people were starting to lose hope and I continued on by myself. I got up to the top of a bluff where its CRP and I see him laying there with his head down. Im walking up to him thinking hes toast, so I grabbed my radio and started telling them I found him. Might I add that Im standing a few yards away from him as its happening. Well he picks his head up, I scream like a little girl, throw the radio in the air, and key word... tried.. getting my gun off of my shoulder. Well I eventually caught up with him again and got a bullet in him to finish it off.

back in my earlier days, we were doing a drive and shot a year and half old buck. He went right down, and it was the beginning of the drive so we contiued on. 5 min later one of the stands saw the buck get up, stagger a little, then take off in an all out sprint. We never found any blood, we think we may have hit him in an antler, knocking him out for awhile. Never did get him.

I could tell you about 5 such heart breakers... But I will just tell you my favorite one. Way back a long time ago, I had a buck come out. It was a young deer, but it had an antler growing around its face and I thought it would make a cool trophy so I took the shot. The deer spun to run at the sound of the shot but the arrow still caught him right behind the shoulder. However, instead of going thru the lungs or heart, the deer had turned enough that the arrow came out of the middle of his neck. Bows were slower back in those days, and we used big lincoln log aluminum arrows...
Anywho, I go over there and there is blood spray everywhere with a trail the size of a sidewalk. So I think "easy track job".
I left my bow and stand up in the tree and headed back to get help.
So I call a buddy who owes me a favor and he reluctantly agrees to help. On the way to get the deer he is constantly complaining about needing to get back home right away... What a buzz kill.
So we get out there and start tracking. Just like I thought the trail only goes a short distance with my buck lying at the end on the edge of a steep draw. As we approach the buck I immediately noticed his eyes were closed and said to my friend don't stand in front of him, he is still alive...
He gives me a look and starts his whining again about how the buck is dead, lets get him tagged and get going... I said I am going to run over and get my bow and finish him and the dude just about blows a gasket  But I ignore him and run over and get my bow and come back. As I am preparing to shoot the "dead" buck I ask one more time for my friend to not stand in front of the deer which he imedeatly responded look at that blood trail, the thing is dead, lets get going!
So I just grabbed an arrow out of my quiver and stabbed the deer in the heart. He jumped to his feet and ran right over the top of my friend knocking him down into the ravine. and spraying blood all over him.
The broadhead had cut the artery in the neck alongside the throat but had not severed it... It looked as if when the deer laid down, or passed out, and calmed down its heart rate the artery cut clotted back together till I came along and jabbed him again with another arrow.
