Squirrel Problems

Unread postby LenH » Mon Apr 12, 2010 7:27 am

I have 5 walnut trees within 30 yards of my house.
Every tree in my yard and all my neighbors yards
have squirrel nests. At least FIVE nests a tree.

I guess the squirrel population has boomed and
they need to expand their housing. I have a couple
that have chewed holes in my eaves and have taken
up residence in my house.

I fixed the holes with chicken wire and even tried to spray
a squirrel repelant concoction I got off the internet. It
did not work.

I did a little research and there is a guy in Richland Center
called Terry Sime that does pest removal. I thought the name
was familiar. I called him and low and behold he is a Gays Mills
Guy. MY HOMETOWN.

Terry lent me one of his live traps and it is already in place on the roof.

If I catch any I will drive them way out in the country and let them go.
There are lots of squirrels in the area. I will update this squirrel fiasco
daily for a week on my blog.

Len, you are more mature than I am with the live trap relocation. I drive them over to someone's yard that I really like, and turn them loose... I wouldn't want them to miss out on squirrel watching! They often comment on the increase in their squirrel population, and I get a warm, nutty feeling for all I do for them.

Bridge, you a funny man... When I was a kid there was this creepy guy who would always nark on us for drinking or call the police just cause we were hanging out... So one day we stepped up the "get even" pranks from the boring old burning bag of poo on the doors step to putting a large, live, and very angry live trapped woodchuck into his mail box for him to find...
Well, kids are stupid, and the mail had not yet been delivered as we had thought... We watched from a neighboring house for him to get the mail, but instead saw a mail jeep pull up... That thing dove right into her truck, and she jumped out screaming... Guess you had to be there.

I found it more effective to mold a smoke bomb into modeling clay that was placed on the door step, with the lit fuse aimed directly at the door where it would open. Better penetration of the colored smoke and sulphur smell into the residence that way after ringing the doorbell.

Back to the squirrels, relocating them doesn't alway work... at times, I've had to have an actual sit-down meeting with them to negotiate terms of the neighborhood.

After this past weekend, I'm up to (17) red squirrels and (4)chippys counting from March 5th this year. I don't have a clue where they are all coming from but they aren't coming back. ;)

Squirrels are one of the leading causes of house fires due them constantly chewing on things. Electrical wires are one of their favorite things to chew on.
