Mulies

Unread postby Osprey » Fri Apr 09, 2010 4:49 am

The thread on trophies got me dreaming about mulies again when I started looking through old pics. Spent five awesome seasons in the badlands of North Dakota cooking for an outfitter, was a great experience. Still miss that place, but I've got four points toward a gun tag and hoping for this year, need to take one of the flitlocks out there and smoke one of those big grey buggers.

Anybody else do much on mule deer?

Enjoy the ND pics...

Not a Mulie hunter... at least not yet. Who knows maybe some day. Nice pics, thanks.

I have yet to have to opportunity Osprey, but it sure looks like you were in some good territory! I would love to get out and hunt Mulies some day...but it just isn't in the single parent budget...yet. My truck will finally be paid off in June...then I can start saving! ;)

I only hunted them once... Well really, I was targeting whitetails but had an either / or tag... I missed one that I grossly misjudged the distance in the open plains on... And I had a close call on the same mulie the next day as I snuck up on him bedded... That was Montana about 15 years ago...

Like most have said, hunting mulies is on my dream list of things to do yet. Some day I hope to get out west and try to take one down. I've even thought about taking a summer camping vacation on public land out west just to kind of turn it into a scouting trip and see what I come up with.

Any who hope to hunt them, at least for archery, should look at North Dakota. Don't necessarily get the huge bucks like Utah and CO can produce, but obviously some very nice bucks. Licenes are cheapest I found out west, $215 last I checked, million acres of public land on the Little Missouri National Grasslands, and the tags (which you have to put in for by late January, although there are normally some left over you can buy when that happens) are for one buck, either species, so you can shoot a whitetail instead if a brute comes by.
