If you don't have preference points for elk already, you aren't going hunting in Wyoming next year, regardless. (Unless you are going hunting with a reduced price cow/calf only tag, win a Super tag raffle, or a commissioner/governor's tag.....)

That is correct. “Wyoming statute says nonresidents must have a licensed guide or resident companion to hunt big or trophy game in federally designated wilderness areas. The resident companion will need to get a free non-commercial guide license from a Game and Fish office. The law does not prohibit nonresidents from hiking, fishing or hunting game birds, small game, or coyotes in wilderness areas. Only nonresident big and trophy game hunters must have a licensed guide or resident companion.”
Hunting in WY gets involved. Beyond the federal wilderness areas, also consider the following:
On State owned lands, you can HUNT without a resident or a guide, but you can’t camp overnight or make a fire.

There is a swath of land running through the lower third of Wyoming called the checkerboard area. The legality of corner hopping has long been questioned and is confusing at best. Most LEO identify it as illegal and violators will be prosecuted by the knowing landowners as trespassing.

That's what I thought I remembered from watching born and raised. Seems a backwards not being able to hunt federal wilderness without a guide since the land is taken care of with fed dollars. Doubt I will ever hunt wyoming anyways. Probably hit Idaho next year then the year after go to Montana with the buddy for deer.
