Went to a spot with a plan in mind. Saw a LOT of pre-rut sign. Fresh scrapes and rubs everywhere, including one seriously impressive rub. Was hoping my approach was going to help unlock some more established trails and figure out bedding. I didn’t have any history to rely on.

So despite the loaded sign, nothing was really connecting the dots. I was surprisingly cold, so I pulled the plug early rather than fart around and set up somewhere that sign didn’t dictate.

Decided to check out a patch that was possibly overlooked. Scouted without bow in hand. Hit a trail leading to an opening and was so focused on the trail that I wasn’t careful coming around a big shrub. I cleared the shrub and immediately sight-bumped a nice one. Didn’t have a great look at him, but he was tall-ish, kinda dark rack with bright white tips. He bolted and a check revealed a doe with him. Maybe she’s heating up early?

Anyway, overlooked is a surprise every time. Nothing was remarkable on an aerial, but might be worth checking out again assuming the buck didn’t run to the next county.

Found it dead 40 yards or so after the second arrow. First shot had a little more 1/4 to than I realized but his near leg was forward and I put it tight to the shoulder just below halfway up the body. The exit was 3 or 4 ribs back. Smashed one lung for sure and I think got the other but didnt bother with a great autopsy. Second arrow hit just below the spine about 6 inches back from the first and severed the arteries under the spine. Probably didnt need it but the blood was amazing after that hit. So 2 arrows that wouldve killed it on there own was pretty cool to me. Overall a absolutely blast in the woods and the recovery was fun. Had a few people come out and my 4 yr old son was the first to walk up on it. Pretty cool regardless of size but I am jacked about how cool he is. Not my biggest buck but for sure biggest on public and I think it's pretty safe to call it a public land giant. Super knarly rack with I think 14 score able points maybe 15. I'll see if I can figure out a picture.

That’s an awesome buck. Throw up a few more pictures if you want to. All kinds of character.

That’s a wonky rack for sure. Never gonna find another like that!

Congrats!
