Re: Live from the field 2020
Paddled out to a spot on public. First hunt of the year is always special. I will not be disappointed at all if I don’t see a deer. So great to be on stand. Good luck!

It is great to be in a tree again! Sitting out on a hardwood point jutting into a swamp on public. Sunk to the knees on the way in. The walk back in the dark will be challenging. Almost crunch time! Get that Buck! Good luck!
Welcome, UncleBuck!
Saw 4 young bucks. 2 within range.
Decided to get down and still hunt the edges during the last 30 minutes. If I had gotten down 5 minutes sooner I would have been in the money on a group of does. I’ve got their number though.
With 2 chops and a roast left in the freezer, getting meat is my first priority.
Oh, and I let one fly at a turkey at 45 yards. Missed. Haha working out the jitters!
I hunt, I fish and I sing guitar solos in songs.

Re: Live from the field 2020
I had a great, unexpected sit. Went to an overlooked spot close to a highway where I found two buck beds last spring. I was within 85 yards of one bed, and also was in a good spot to observe a clear cut. I was staying out of my good spots because the wind wasn't right for the beds, and I wanted to get the hang and hunt kinks out.
1.5 hours left of light, a doe and fawn came out at 100 or so yards to the east. 20 minutes later 2 yearlings came out to the east too. One hour left, a nice 3 or 4 year old 8 point with 5" brows came from the east at about 60 yards. I was able to film him as I wasn't interested in shooting him. With a west wind, he surprisingly didn't get my wind. Behind him was a 1.5 year old.
30 minutes left, a nice wide 3.5 year old 8 point came from the east and got within 35 yards. He winded me but never figured me out, and stayed within 125 yards for 20 minutes.
If I go back, I'll move about 80 yards to the east.

Saw a lone doe shortly after setting up. Had a fellow hunter join me for the last 30 minutes or so.

Re: Live from the field 2020
Sat near some bedding this evening. Was in the tree by 2:00. Got rained on (with no rain gear) most of the evening. 5 1/2 hours in the tree.
Saw 1 velvet spike. 7 deer total.

Re: Live from the field 2020
Place I wanted to go was loaded with cars. Never hunted it before so I didn’t know what to expect. Could be a great piece of property, but way more pressure than I expected for the size. Doesn’t mean I won’t hunt it in the future though, but it’s no longer virgin ground.
Went to another couple areas. One had promise until the wind shifted all the way to the West. Then I was toast from the way the land laid out and where the bedding was.
Last place was interesting. Plenty of deer, but I was in observation mode. No bucks though.
It was really more of a scout, so I’m relatively happy with what I saw.
Back at it tomorrow.

Re: Live from the field 2020
Observation sit from the LW tonight. There’s 2 main bedding areas I was interested in. At 7:00 I had a yearling buck come right off the tip of the peninsula in the cats. Took him 20 minutes to hit the field edge which was only 75+ yards away. It’s always fun when they read the script even if it’s a little one.
I just about started packing up when out comes the deer parade from the other bedding! I could tell two of the bucks were decent, but it was too dark to see if one was my target buck. There were 6-7 deer total.
Unfortunately I couldn’t tell exactly where they hit the field at... I THINK they took the funnel I wanted them to but I think a follow up sit is necessary. If I guess wrong and hunt it with a SE wind my hunt would be over before it started.

Very cool!!!! I had a huge redtail hawk join me once...almost kept me from hunting because I wanted to watch him so much. Nature is awesome, especially watching the food chain

Re: Live from the field 2020
Got out yesterday, nice rain. Lol. Bumped up me on the way in, had one I didn’t see at 25 while I was pulling the bow up, missed a chip shot in a doe at 15, right over her back, and heard another later. Good 1st day. Could have been better, but overall, very nice.

Re: Live from the field 2020
Bought to head out for the evening sit. Trying to decide if I want to setup on a good buck bed I know on top of a finger ridge or setup below him In a thermal hub type area. Calling for the wind to switch mostly west close to dark which wouldn't be great for up top but hopefully the thermals would be pulling down by time. Or just go to the easier spot in the bottom and see what light winds/thermals will do for me down low.. decisions decisions

Re: Live from the field 2020
First spot I wanted to hunt I saw boot tracks and followed them to a trail camera. Next spot was a jungle, no way to shoot, same with the next tree (wasn't that way in April ). Ended up in a decent looking spot...wind is marginal.
Good luck to everyone out!

Bring your milkweed! Sometimes I get stuck in a decision as well. Then I realized to just get in there and go for it. Either way you can take something away from the hunt no matter what the decision. Good luck!
