Chiggers

Unread postby mheichelbech » Sun Sep 06, 2020 4:58 am

What are you doing to avoid chiggers? I went out scouting last week, really just set a camera and know it looks and feels like I have chicken pox.

Sawyers brand Permethrin spray on and let dry. But spray everything, socks, shoes, pants, anything that can come in contact with grass and let them get on you. Then good to go

Sawyers permethrin works good. I usually wear hip boots and repel and that helps too.

Also to help get rid of them fill the bathtub up with a couple inches of water and add a cup of bleach. Then take a rag and wash up real good with the bleach/water. Itll kill them and make um fall off and you'll start feeling better quick.

Get the top and bottoms and you wont deal with it again and be walking thru the nastiest spots in the woods.

Interesting...how are they in the heat while scouting?

Also, I did not know permethrin worked for chiggers. Thanks!

Sorry these are old pics. Iv been looking for them for a long time too! You cant really see the chiggers in the bad pics but you get the idea.

They arent too terrible in the heat, they are basically work out cloths ppl wear. Once you break your first sweat then you wont notice them. Youll get used to them. Really, youll only need them for the first few weeks of the season unless you like summer scouting. During season I dont even use bug spray.

I wear permathin and I got about 60 chigger bites on my knees and above. First time I've ever seen permathin not work.

Permethrin is effective, but it takes time before it kills them, usually several minutes. This is fine for slow-moving insects like ticks. But for mosquitoes, etc. it's not the best. They do their damage before dying off. I don't know where chiggers fall into as we don't really have issues with them here in MA. But permethrin destroys ticks.... I love the stuff...

I've had similar bad experiences with chiggers. Deep Woods Off works for me for both chiggers and ticks. I thoroughly spray my pants and long sleeve shirt, socks, boots, as well as the edges where pants meet my boots, shirt etc. On hot days I will take the can with me and respray where I'm sweaty, especially below the waist. The last couple years I haven't had a chigger bites doing this.

If you buy martins permethrin or something similar (about the same price as Sawyers) you can make bottles upon bottles upon bottles of your own spray. You can mix it stronger as well.

Permathin didn't work as well as expected.
Putting my legs up while watching TV soaking in calamine lotion and neosporin.
Hopefully this won't gross anyone out.
I got around 80 bites.
Other leg is about same.

I'm just fortunate they stayed below the important area.

They look better today then yesterday healing fast.

Sharp thorny Kentucky grass cut me up pretty good.
