Moon says this week?

Unread postby mheichelbech » Fri Jun 26, 2020 12:18 pm

In my area, just north of Louisville, KY, I have notice deer being out around 6-7 in the evenings in several fields around here. On the way home this evening I saw 7-8 deer and a large flock of turkeys out and I rarely even see deer in this particular field.

Wondering if the moon may be driving this. Weather has been steady and no other variables except new crop growth are present that I can tell.

It was right at 6 pm yesterday that I saw them out. This was in 3 different places and each one was 3-5 miles from the other. I have posted about this before on here. It always seems to be most noticeable in the Summer up to hunting season. I think it shows how the moon can impact movement when deer aren't pressured. I know I will see them probably for another day or 2 and then won't see them out in daylight again much until next month. This is not to say they aren't out earlier when I am not driving through but I think that is unlikely given it's the heat of the day.

I have been noticing a lot more daylight activity here in the Southern part of Pa in a crop field that I usually keep my eye on. We did have a few quick showers and storms move in this week which made the mornings a bit cooler. Every day I’ve been observing more deer and finally seen my first decent daylight buck this morning around 6:30am. Though the soy beans are really starting to sprout up and around the same time 2 seasons ago there was soybeans and not corn I’ve noticed a lot more activity and the bucks started to move in and stayed up until season opener, then all the other hunters pushed them out.

Not to hijack this post but I never followed the moon charts... is it really that reliable and how many of y’all actually follow it? I guess I assumed it has some effects on deer but not enough to justify following it.. do you want to hunt when moons overhead?

All I can say is that periodically I tend to see deer in the fields either going to or coming from work from summer up to hunting season and it usually lines up with moon/activity period guides. I think when deer get hunting pressure, all bets are off unless you can get close to their beds undetected.
