Well that's a wrap! headed out at about 10:30 today. Headed by the area I had been going into. I had figured out an easier route into where I figured the birds were spending most of their time. But it still didn't look easy. And with the 80 degree temps and humidity. I wimped out on that plan. Body wasn't feeling it!

So I started driving around. With very few turkeys seen. Even on private spots, where there was always at least 1. So I basically decided to head farther north. To look at new to me pieces of public. But first I decided to drive around a chunk that I had only checked out a couple of times this spring.

And wouldn't you know it. I spotted a tom. "On" public. Within 100 yards of the road. Between 2 parking areas. The area had been burned, maybe late winter/early spring. So no tangled dry grass. Just lush greenness. But pretty open. Bird was paralleling the road. And 2 short ridges blocked his view of the parking area he was headed towards. Went light and headed out.

Wished I could say it all worked to perfection. But never saw the tom again. Myriads of guesses as to what happened. But it was still a blast. And the heart was filled with anticipation for almost an hour. Sat for about 2. Didn't use my walking sticks. But had them telescoped short and in my pack. Just in case. No raingear either. And of course a thunderstorm came thru. And it dumped hard for about 6 minutes. With a half hour of drizzle. But it actually felt good. Until the sun came out. Then it was sweltering again!

Be unpacking the SUV of turkey gear. Maybe replace it with fishing and camping gear!!!

No turkeys in range today, got some good deer video tho. Pretty sure I had a couple of encounters with this guy last season. Looks like he has potential. Still got maybe an hour before it storms, season ends tomorrow.

And we're rained out. Only took twenty minutes.

Does this still count as "live from the field"? I made it a mile.

Farmer from up the road came by with a floor jack and helped me change the tire. As he was leaving he told me to "give him a call if I want to deer hunt his farm in the fall". Everything worked out ok.

That's a great pic dhd.

Bummer about your tire, but a new farm to hunt was worth it.

Landed my first ever paddlefish, June 5th, on the big muddy (Missouri River). It was my 5th or 6th trip. 5 hour drive round trip. 2-4 hours of slinging 5 oz sinkers and treble hooks every trip. I feel like I paid my dues. Not the biggest one in the river, but I am pumped!

Also, pretty excited to cook some up and see how it tastes.

Sweet! Never caught one, but they are some prehistoric looking things, eh?
