2020 Scouting Reports

So I have been hearing chainsaw work that could be on my local public. But no DNR trucks around, just a white truck that has an atv on a trailer.

Walked the 40+ acres after the truck left today and he was BUSY. On the public ground, flat ridgetop. Basically it was a TSI, timber stand improvement type cut from my best guess. For every 20'x20' square a third of the trees are leveled. And left lay at the moment.

The movement through will be choked down to certain gaps in the downed trees.

I am in shock. Public ground can and does change but...
If you open up the canopy, use the good timber.
If you open up the canopy, better get after those Autumn olive and other invasive species. You just gave them a dose of Miracle Grow.

They must have a plan. But I did too. Chasing deer up there just got crazy.

I went to my buddy’s camp this weekend to help him scout. I found a ton of sign on the upper 1/3 of the hill. Also found a lot of doe bedding and bumped quite a few deer. I couldn’t locate any buck beds but did find some solid rut setups for him. We didn’t get to cover as much ground as we wanted but still a good weekend.

Snow receded enough to take my dog to the other side of the front yard... Found this. Guess I should set up on the roof.

Had some time to hit a place that I was curious about. Didn't have enough time to get through all I wanted to see, but it was better than nothing.

There's a bunch of stuff in the wet that I'll inspect another day. This stuff I hit was too easy. On the lookout for overlooked and better bedding.

I should add that I’ve been feeling under the weather and this was just what the doctor ordered. Man, I love spring scouting.

Scouted a hill country spot this afternoon looked good found a chewed up shed from last year. Was crop on top really steep ridges down to a creek. I found some buck beds in one of the oxbows of the creek.


Just curious if you guys have noticed if some of the ridges are to steep they will bed low? Just seemed to steep for them to bed on but ive only scouted hill country a handful of times.

JAK did you scout the military crest?
From that, I usually can look down far enough to spot the itty bitty flats that only deer find. Or a thick patch to drop down to and investigate.
Military crest usually will have the path of least resistance trail angling down to explore also. They start close to the head of a draw and give them a route down without pushing straight up or down. Conserving energy type trails.

There was a few trails leading down to creek bottom that went through a bench i looked and looked for beds on those but no luck.

I went and scouted a small piece earlier. Was mostly lookin for hogs, but actually found quite a bit of good buck sign. Will definitely check it out this fall! This rub has been used for years and had tine marks at shoulder height on me. I'm 6' tall

Hello everyone. First time to post very new to the beast. I too. 20 year detoure from hunting and just getting back into it. I’ve read a lot of post watched a lot of video. Like a lot of the flunked dan talks about I would set up on the first sign I see cam home impty handed. Been doing a lot of scout this off season not going to be able to make all the spots I’ve mapped out. Want to understand more about Sped scouting and hunting, so that the spots I can’t get to this off season I can hunt. Sorry for the long intro.

When speed scouting does that mean finding a trail with a good buck track, following the trail until you find good sign then still hunting up the trail with some sits I hunt big woods in Texas and Louisiana the sign can be fresh but the deer can be 3-4 miles away it seems.

I think "speed scouting" can have different meanings to different hunters. To me, if I am going to scout a parcel I have never set foot on.... I select areas via cyber scouting that eliminates a huge portion of the area. That will leave a small portion I want to look at. Then I go in to speed scout it, I generally will walk the wind tunnel first. If the sign is there, I may move on to the transition lines and for buck beds.

I typically hunt Hill Country. I can usually tell right away at the sign I find (or dont find) in the wind tunnel area

I have found several like that in the pass. What amazed me was, when I found these kind of stands....it looked like they removed every sapling wrist sized and a little bigger from 40 yard radius to construct the stand
