DA BEARS!!
I am going to have a really, really tough time getting any sleep tonight. Early tomorrow morning I depart for the Canadian big woods to establish my initial baits at the stands I put in place last spring. My truck smells of doughnuts, grains, vanilla, etc. My mind is flashing back to the ticked off bear this spring that was knocking down trees and stumps while I prepped a stand site on a peninsula that was fronted by several different bear dens.
Last years do-it-yourself hunt was extremely difficult... and ultimately rewarding in the way that only a hunt of this type can create. I managed to pull off locating stand sites, stand placement, baiting, successful hunting, and GETTING THE BEAR OUT OUT OF THE WOODS by myself. I took 320 mg. of aspirin before I started hauling the bear out by myself... no heart history here, just a medic that believes in preparation. Getting the bear out by yourself is an extraordinary feat sometimes- and being a "lone wolf" can have some disadvantages. If a big bear comes in this year, he will definitely get my arrow and I'll get him out even if I have to cut him up. But I do not intend to hesitate to arrow the first good two hundred pounder that comes in, either. Anyone who doesn't thinkg getting a 200 pound bear out of the wilderness by yourself is a job... may want to try it sometime.
I'll get pics and a report going when I return, right now I'm just trying to slow the adrenalin down a might...

Thanks guys- is it just me, or is there a touch of fall in the air? I've got some green acorns falling on my deck...

I've been thinking the same thing...here in SE WI its been in the high 60's when I wake up and head off to work in the morning as opposed to the 90 degrees it was by 8am the last few weeks...Im hoping that means fall!
Tell me...how the heck did you get that thing out by yourself?

yes sir- Ontario. I absolutely love it, my hunting area is very rugged with few roads and little access. The locals pretty much run up and down the few roads that penetrate the wilderness on quads all day and hope that something runs out in front of them. They spend a lot of time on the roads of any clearcut that gets put in as well. The moose, bear, wolves, Canadian Lynx, and wildlife in general flourish here with little human interaction. If you get a quarter mile off the road, you never see or find sign of another human. It is my favorite hunting environment, physically challenging and a "one on one" experience with the animals that live there.
I saw one black bear yesterday, right around the 200 pound mark... can't wait to hunt.

I use a bear sized Otter sled with a heavy duty tow rope on the front... I twist a hatchet handle into the rope up front to use as a drag handle. No matter how you slice it, getting a bear out is a lot of work. When the bear is in your truck and you are driving home- it all becomes worth it.

Thanks, Black Squirrel- once again it looks like a bumper berry crop up there... but then again, I can't say I've been there a year when there wasn't.... Roads are one of the only things that penetrate the woods / bush in this area, and the wild raspberries literally line the roadsides for countless miles. The bears adapt to this by stepping onto the roads (dirt) an hour or so before dark and take advantage of the easy walking and food. When the raspberries are ripe, you can't drive a quarter mile without finding a large pile of bear scat on the road. Last year I jumped 5 different bears in an hour with my truck, with a couple of good bruins to boot. Jumped out and chased one of them, one of these days I'll have to film it.

Re: DA BEARS!!
Good luck with the BEARS. Just got back from MN and saw a few little red oak acorns on the driveway.
To film you chasing bears, maybe try the hat cam or glasses mounted cam. I remember meeting a guy from Idaho at a hunting show and he wanted to strap a camera to a dog as it ran mountain lions. Thought that would be cool to see, but would opt to see you chasing one with a jelly donut in your pocket
