Public land tree prep?

Unread postby Bowhunting Brian » Thu Dec 19, 2019 11:00 am

Another public land hunter says part of his strategy is to find and prep his trees in the off-season. He states the rules of public land that he can't do any cutting or damaging of trees. How does one prep a tree if you can't cut any branches?

Got a couple spots I tie bricks with clothes line string to limbs to get me a few shot windows. Certainly not preferred, but that spot has piles of bricks laying in drainages and the rules don’t say nothing bout bending out the way. Other than that I trip and fall a lot which sadly results in some snapped off twigs. What can I say I’m clumsy ;)

I knock down dead branches and just work around the live ones. Sometimes I will bend the live ones back and tie them off with monofilament fishing line.

There are two types of public land hunters: those that cut limbs, and those that lie about cutting limbs.

Not all public has the same rules. Better check the rules for the public you are on. Dnr pamphlet doesnt apply to all public for those rules.

Most public I hunt I can’t trim anything. I mean I can’t get caught trimming anything.

I can honestly say I have never cut a living branch on public land. Maybe that's why I'm not always in the game. Lol.

Jackson - Love it !

It's funny how we have to go letter of the law. And there will be plenty of guys willing to call LEO if they see cut marks on thumb-sized limbs. Whiney bunch.

In nature we have storms, ice events, wet snow and such that naturally trim trees and bushes. If folks would be a little sensitive to what they are cutting, trimming, or altering, it would be beneficial to the plants/trees. No diff than fertilizing the better oak trees to keep em producing.

Those guys who use chainsaws and take down whole trees ruin it for everyone.

I’ve dropped pins of bait piles/illegal stands to wardens and they never did anything
I’ve sent trail camera photos with GPS pins of guys driving pickup trucks on “foot access only” trails on public land, with the license plate shown.

Wardens didn’t do a thing about either situation. They’re more interested in catching guys shooting ducks over corn piles.

That being said, I’m breaking branches if necessary. I don’t carry pruners or anything, but I’ll break anything that I feel is in my way.

In reality, one wind storm does more damage to trees in an hour than I probably will all season...
