Is the rut never good in Iowa?

There are always poor years bud. I'm just soaking up a full 5 days of some of the best hunting in my home state that I've ever had.

Congrats Backstraps! And nice passes Muddy.

Dad and I hunted the CRP tonight. He got the luxurious box blind this time and I hung his River’s Edge stand with some screw in steps in a new spot. Made me appreciate the LW and sticks! :?

The neighbor gave me permission to hunt last week. There’s next to nothing there for habitat as it’s 98% ag, but there’s a couple trees near the standing corn on the property line, so that’s where I hung it.

I ended up seeing 3 bucks and 3 does. Passed a yearling buck at 15 yards and another yearling at 90. 3rd buck was trailing a doe through the CRP and would have been tough shooting. They were 150+.

That’s a sweet little set up and I could see a TON of ground. Good chance we kill there some day, just hope the landowner doesn’t start hunting it himself again.

Back to work for the week!

Sat all day. Morning movement was great till 10. The afternoon was uneventful. Deer came in with about 10 minutes of shooting light left.
It was really windy and that’s supposed to continue tomorrow .
I might take the day off and get done things done @ the house so the wife is a little happier.
I was reminded today when I got home by her that there wasn’t a buck in the bed of the truck. She got the bird and a “Love you too dear”.

Woke up at a little after 3AM. Sinuses didn't feel as infected so said what the heck! Got my stuff organized and in the car. Took a shower. Got down to the buddies and BS'd with him and his wife for far too long. Finally headed out on the 4 wheeler and got my gear hauled to spot along a drainage ditch. On the ground of course. Drove the wheeler a couple hundred yards away and parked it. Was ready to go in my spot at 12:30.

Jumped a doe fawn on my way back. Think it was her I saw later, twice. Got to within 10 yards once. Started getting pretty sore so had to redo my seating arrangement. A little over an hour to go had 2 deer out in front on me a ways. Finally had a spike go through at about 40 yards. The second deer busted me while I was trying to sit still, and try to keep tabs on 2 deer about 80 yards apart. And try to wince through the cramp in my shoulders. Did see 5 or 6 way off in the harvested bean field to the NW of me. Pretty sure the one that left right away was a buck.

I'm really sore, so won't hunt tomorrow. Maybe Wednesday, cause of PT on Tuesday and Thursday.

Congrats backstraps. At least someone is having fun this rut..... Muddy.

Way to finish the deal James's buddy.

Had a fun time at a national wildlife refuge hunt today with Dad. Blind sit, based on sign in the dark.

New spot tonight, very neat and will be in it more. Got my annual swamp bath, waist deep in swamp muck. Had to Go back and change gear out and bring hip boots in. Every year, I seem to do it at least once. I’ve been sick this past week, so I didn’t want to push it. At least I was only a few hundred yds from the car when it happened. Got set up, and something fell out of my pack, a doe or small buck gets up from 40 yds, and takes 2 hopes, then walks off. It was upwind. What’s interesting, is I walked by it at maybe 20 yds in the cattails, and it never knew i was there. Playing the wind and a slow final approach to the right tree. Now if I can just keep my stuff under control.

Seen 6 doe and 6 buck this weekend for me. Of the 6 bucks one was a shooter. He chased some does on the opposite side of the ravine from me. I grunted at him but he just kept on chasing and went off over the hill. Hopefully I will be getting out tomorrow and Wednesday

My third time in this tree, probably a dumb move. Had one snorting at me on the way in. Just saw a smallish buck slowly walking an edge 100+ yards away. Dead calm wind. Nice morning, good luck to all whose out!

20+ winds, 3" snow, and a 2 hr school delay. Coffee is hot and we're watching Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Arc before breakfast. Heading out tomorrow when the wind has died down, the suns out, and the high pressure will out em on their feet. I hope.

Good "old fashioned" deer season right now 1 degree with a high of 12. Thankfully the wind isn't as crazy as yesterday.
