Big and High rubs

Unread postby Swampthing » Sat Apr 03, 2010 3:04 pm

Dan had mentioned in another post about belly high rubs being from an old mature deer. I found a couple last weekend that give me some hope .

Just south of this point where I found these rubs is a beaver dam.Looks like the buck is traveling along the dam ,to his bedding area.I never actually found his bed,but will go back for another look tommorrow.

While there are no hard and fast rules regarding mature whitetails, there certainly are tendencies that I pay attention to. When a rub starts about three feet off the ground or higher, it really starts getting my attention.

I'm going to Make a separate post about the "Advanced search" feature of this forum for all of us scouters, one way to take advantage of all the knowledge available on the Beast.

Nice... Let us know if you find the bed. If you can't, post an aerial and I will try and see if I can guess where you should look.

I always look at rub height rather than tree diameter. If you can find tracks in the area that usally gives you a good idea of who is making the rubs. Their is a major slob that lives near my house that had broken branches on a rubbed tree just under 6ft off the ground with 5 finger tracks nearbye.

Here goes... I would walk the transition line ( marked in bright green )
I would look for beds along that line and also keep an eye out for a small tree or brush in the cattails that might hold a bed along that line.... Within the marsh, there seems to be some slightly higher elevations with differing vegetation. I marked them with black circles. I would expect to find your bucks beds in one of these spots... If you get back out there, let us know how I did... Tough map, the colors really blend.

Can you post a topo? I would like to see if my black spots are a little higher elevation, and see if I am missing something that shows up on the topo.

Swampthing, where have you looked for aerials of the area?
You cannot invade mainland America. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.
