Colorado 2011

Unread postby Jackson Marsh » Sun Jul 24, 2011 4:07 pm

I drew an elk tag this year for a limited entry (takes 3 years) unit(s). Anyone else going out? I will be hunting with 3 buddies. We went to the same area in 2008 and came home with one 4x4 (3 hunters), we should have gone 3 for3, which would not be to bad for 3 elk hunting rookies on a DIY public land hunt. If anyone is elk hunting and needs some pointers order the Elk Nut DVD s vol. one thru four, they really flatten out the learning curve. They hunt public land and go thru many different calling scenarios which WORK! We leave Aug. 30th, should be a great time. Good luck to all the elk hunters heading west this year.

We will be bowhunting. Plan on setting up camp four miles in, and hunt from there.

Good luck. And 1 for 3 is good, I thought I read avg success for bowhunters is 11%, I could be wrong.

What part of CO? I hunted CO 2 times DIY solo in 97 & 98- public 1st combined rifle season around Oct 10. It was a general not limited tag. Ate both tags, but had a great experience, hunted around Basalt and Carbondale I think it was unit 43 Pitkin County (even thought I wasnt restricted to that unit).

We use frame packs to pack camp in, walking very slowly it is doable, but not easy.

Bummer one of your hunting partners doesn't have horses. :D Do you set up a camp tent, or individual small tents? If you have any pics from last year, it would be great to see them.

Our tags are good for units 12,23,24 I believe, which are between Steamboat Springs and Meeker.

When I have more time this afternoon I will post pics from the last trip out (it was in 2008).
