2009 mount WTH
Got my mount back about a week ago. Was not overy impressed with the quality. Now today I noticed something shiny on the face. Looks to be a staple. After I took the pic I was able to brush the hair over it so its not visible. Now that I know its there I will always be looking for it. I have never seen a staple on a mount before. Is that standard taxidermy practice to fasten the cape to the form?

They use pins. No need to look at it, just pull it out. Or better yet, bring it back and have the taxy pull it out.
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

Might it be a T-pin? They can sure look like staples if they are pushed in tight. Won't hurt a thing to pull it out of there.

OK I tried pulling it out. Sucker will not come out. I am afraid of breaking off or cutting off a bunch of hair and having a bald spot.

If it is a T-pin you should be able to grab it with some needle nose and get it out. If it is truly a staple you may have to get a small screwdriver under it and lift it a bit so you can get a good grip on it. If you can't get it, is your taxi far away from you? As Spysar said, take it back and have him remove it. It does look to be in an obvious spot and you shouldn't have to look at it!

Got it out! I am no taxi, but am pretty sure there should not be a staple in the cheek.

Wow, it really was a staple!! You are right, there really shouldn't be any staples in that area...very strange!!

Uhm.. I sure hope it don't start falling apart now. Beginning to think I should of just hit the thing with a little brown paint.

Should be dried down to the mannikin now with no fears of falling apart. Was there a blemish or scar there? Didn't appear so in the photos. Still, a very strange spot for a staple. At the very least, if you are worried about it, call your taxi and express your concern. Better to address it now than 6 months from now.

Re: 2009 mount WTH
I’m not shocked by this at all. A lot of taxis still use staples, pins, or brads and usually they are the ones cranking out the mounts at lower prices.
In this day and age there is no reason to use any staples, pins or brads at all. If a taxi really needs pins on a deer about the only place they might need them is one in the front corner of each eye (which will be pulled or finished over with epoxy putty) and maybe a small T-pin in the lachrymal glands that may or may not need finishing over the pin.
The main reason to use staples, pins or brads in places other than the front corner of the eyes or in the lachrymal glands is to hold the hide in place as it dries and shrinks over a manikin that is too big for the deer. Even when this is done, there will still be drumming (where the skin has shrunk and lifted off the manikin so it is tight like a drum). If the cape was properly tanned, shaved, and prepped there should be very minimal shrinkage and pins, staples or brads are not needed. A good taxi will use the right sized form to begin with or make the form fit the skin.
I wouldn’t bother taking it back to the taxi. There’s nothing that can be done now. You could talk to him and explain your dissatisfaction but I don’t think that will change anything and it certainly won’t change your mount at this point.
The bottom line is you need to shop around for a new taxi.

Did you use Richard in New Berlin, again?

Not New Berlin tax. And he was not cheap (over 400). I like the guy but I will not take any more heads to him.

Makes me feel pretty lucky Don...I have a super good taxidermist that is really creative and has a great eye for the business.
The picture I posted of my mount just does not do it justice and I wish I could show you all in person just what a great job he does. Not knocking any of the taxidermists on this site, but as long as my taxidermist stays in business, that's where I'll go.
The mount was $500.00 but when I look at it up on my wall, I feel like the buck is still alive and was worth every penny.
