I just blew my own mind...
Im not sure if you guys knew how to do this and i am the last one to know.. But wow! I was messing around with google earth and somehow managed to get "ground level". With this it almost makes your land "3-d". It makes it so much easier to distinguish hills and dips and where a buck would bed!I was up til 4 last night walking around(Thats how you move around) Here is a screen shot and how to get there! The red circle is where the little man is, just drag him where you want...

I knew how to do it, but personally didn't find it useful. I'm glad it helps you though.
You cannot invade mainland America. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.

Seriously, it just doesn't do anything for me. It kind of messes with my eyes actually. I would rather look at a topo and aerial photo.

Topo's and Aerials are tools. "Technique" comes from learning what to look for.
My primary tools are:
1) ACME Mapper because it's FAST to scout with. The screen loads (& pans) quickly, has a large picture (unlike Mapcard) and it has multiple views so I can narrow spots down quickly.
2) Next is the "Birds Eye View" on Bing Maps when ever possible (coverage is very limited).
3) Then Mapcard (a pay service) - This is what I use when I want to get down to the nitty gritty on measuring distances, acreage, seeing topo information on an aerial photo (topo overlay), marking way points, etc. However, there are some other sites that can do most most of the same for free. I haven't got around to learning these yet though.
4) I have a multitude of other sites that I will use if I am having trouble getting a clear picture, but this rarely happens. Usually the first three are plenty.

I use google earth, or bing maps. I have yet to down load any pics to my gps. I also use mytopo sometimes to identify wetlands. Ive been using aerial photos for a long time now. It really helps to locate tree's in Kansas as well. I dont really hunt hilly terrain, but if I did, a topo will tell me what I need to know. I get disorientated using that 3d feature you showed in your original post. It also doesnt accurately depict elevation in my opinion.

Zoom in and it should be in the area where the red circle is on the first picture
