Yep, that is a great place to start, then walk, walk, walk and walk some more. My son and I just got back from a walk ( that produced no horns), but it was nice to get out and found some decent sign though.

Good luck, zap, and keep us posted ;)

It's bitter-sweet closure for a friend of mine here in S.WI after he located the one that got away. Mid-Rut brought this bruiser by a good friend of mine, but a faint blood trail left little to follow after a 100 yards of the monarchs death run. 30 hours of search effort and no deer. Out of curtousy of his neighbors during the prime time, he closed the case until seasons close and then gained the necessary permissions to search the neighboring properties. Not more than 100 yards from his dissipated footsteps lay his lost giant. Framiliar with the gut-wrench, I applaud his efforts in not giving up, even if it was too late to save the meat.

These sheds were found three years earlier on the same property as the gnarly buck he killed. . . Now the question is raised - are these his sheds? Seems to be some similarity.

While I can't take credit for these pics, my good friend, James, has quite the luck.

While shed hunting a cattail marsh, James stumbled upon this day old/fresh coyote kill. He describes the deer to have an open fracture that appeared to be at least a year old on one of his legs, suggesting why the antler on the opposite side grew so funny. James sawed the antlers off and was walking back to his car when low and behold, what do you think he found??

There in the snow was another set of beams, but this wasn't just another antler, it belonged to the dead buck who he had just sawed the antlers from. He held the peices together and it was a perfect fit. When i asked him if it appeared freshly broken, as if the deer may have been hit by a car again, he explained, "No, the attached antler was slightly worn down from rubbing, suggesting the break must have happened during a fight this fall.

Now he wishes he had taken the whole head for a euro mount, but I think the story itself is pretty rewarding - what luck!

Now, if only the damn snow would melt. . . I'm planning on going into the bedroom of the deer on my Holy Hill land, but only once - I have to make the most out of it, so little to no snow is best.
