A little Beast has risen!
This weekend was the opening of youth turkey season in Ohio. Saturday was a bust with the high winds and rain so I decided not to take my son. Sunday looked to be better for weather and I told him we would go in the morning. Well we arrived at the gate to the property at 5:50 am and the surveyors had locked the gate wrong so we couldn't get up the drive. So we just got dressed in the dark at the gate and began walking up the road towards our cabin. We listened for and birds gobbling along the way and didn't hear any. I told him it could be a slow morning and he said "Dad sometimes you get something and sometimes you don't". I chuckled because that's what I told him this last deer season when I took him out.(By the way he did get his first deer this year) When we got to the cabin we went in and I got every thing in the vest situated so I knew where it was so when I was trying to get him set up in the woods I knew where everything was to make it go smoother. So after that we started to do our walk. We heard a gobble and he told me where he thought it was. We listened again and he was right. We set off to hike down the ridge towards the bird. Halfway down the ridge I realized and told him there are multiple birds there. He listened and we heard them gobble and knew there were atleast 2 birds. As we hit the bottom of the ridge we started up the other side and as my head crested the hill I stopped him and I saw 3 birds right above the flat we were walking towards. I told him to go set up by that tree behind us. I turned around to set the decoy up and the birds shut up. I went over to him and The ridge dropped off enough to where the birds could see where I sent him and I told him they may have seen us. I said let's just set up and see what happens. So if any of you have hunted with a young kid you can appreciate the effort it takes to set a kid up. Get there seat set,get the bipod set, make sure the gun is set right for the birds to enter and check their facemask etc....Well we got set expecting the birds in front of us to come in and I called. 2 Birds gobbled to our right about 40 yards away. I barely had enough time to get him turned about 90 degrees and get the bipod adjusted and the birds were there. I told him to shoot when he had a shot as they were only 25 yards away. He was following them and he whispered he couldn't shoot because of trees in the way. As the birds walked to the left their heads went behind different trees and I got him turned quickly back to his original position. They stepped out and the biggest bird went into full strut at 27 yards. As the bird went into full strut the other 3 gobblers ran down. He had 5 gobblers all within 30 yards of him. He ended up shooting the biggest bird. For his first bird he shot a stud of a bird I think. After all the high fives and pics we hauled everything back out to the truck. This wasn't an easy task as it had rained hard and the clay was slippery and every step up the the old logging road was like taking 2 because you slipped back down half of your step. He was a trooper. We hiked about a mile to get to the birds and then a mile back to the truck. We tagged it in and he told the guy at the check station it was his first bird so he gave him a brass coated hook that goes on the bill of his cap(He thought he was the cats meow after that)then he wanted to go fishing so we hiked back to the pond another 1/2 mile. He caught a few. As we were leaving he said dad this was a good day. I saw a deer, 2 geese, got a turkey and caught some fish, But....I'm tired.
I'm proud of him.
His bird weighed 22 lbs.,9-5/8" beard and 3/4" spurs
The bird was almost as long as him.LOL
