Scout 4/9/11

Unread postby Singing Bridge » Sun Apr 10, 2011 9:20 am

4/9/11 I drove up north early this morning to scout a beaver bog I have never hunted before. When I got to the transition line of the bog and higher ground, I did a quick scouting recon of the area. I managed to find a couple of nice rubs and a scrape in what appeared to be a staging area. I noticed several runs exiting the bog into the staging area. The main runs exit on the higher ground right underneath a mature white oak, an excellent stand tree that was backed by several red oaks. The white oak is in an excellent position to cover the runs exiting the bog.

There was a decent scrape in the staging area as well, and it also is within range of the white oak. Deer that have been walking the transition line are still walking into the scrape and it appears they are using the licking branches a fair amount. Here’s the scrape with hair and tracks in it:

A nice licking branch(es) above the scrape:

Standing on the transition line and staring out into the bog, there wasn’t much that appeared promising while glancing over the countless willows and tag alders growing in the muck and water… that is until I focused on the only tree in the bog, a lone and mature maple standing by itself. I waded out and found a nice bed on the only high and dry spot around, with hair in it:

I prepped one other tree on the transition line where tracks and a rub headed into the bog indicated another buck route with a different wind. A lot of driving for one bedding area, but I still consider it to be worth it.

A buck staging with a prevailing wind out to a white oak backed up by a few red oaks, a couple of rubs and a scrape- I also have an excellent approach to the tree- I'm looking forward to hunting it already. 8-)

SB, you work your tail off in the off-season. I am highly impressed and posts like this motivate me to continue to hit the woods and scout.

This is not usually the case, I love those honey hole spots with easy access. But they are easy to overhunt if it's too easy to get to. :D

I can't get enough scouting, virginiashadow- at least until the blackflies start swarming. Keep up the good work.

That's an excellent point and I put this in my log for stand A5:

per Magicman, do NOT overhunt this honey hole of a stand.

Yeah man, you sure are working your tail off. With all the spots you got going you shouldn't have a problem with over hunting your spots. I have a good feeling you'll be rewared this fall, for all your hard work this spring. Look out Beast big buck contest 2011!
