Ticks and turkey hunting

Unread postby NatureBoy » Thu Mar 25, 2010 6:27 am

What do you guys do to keep the ticks and other bloodsuckers at bay while spring hunting? I started spraying odorless permethrin (I use Sawyer Premium brand) on my hunting / scouting clothing last year. It kills 'em on contact and I can wash the clothes 5 or 6 times before I have to reapply. That along with rubber boots has drastically reduced my tick and mosquito woes. Any other ideas?

I've never done anything to prevent them, but it is going to be a bad year in the Midwest for them. I found six crawling on me in SE Mn on Sunday looking for sheds.

Yeah, I never did in the past either. Then a bunch of my friends started getting Lyme disease and that got my attention. Where Lyme is a problem, as long as you get them off within 24 - 48 hours your ok, but I don't want them on me in the first place

I spray down with Permethrin and keep a look out for them. Had Lyme's twice and RMSF once. Yeah, takes 24 hours for lymes, but all they've got to do is bite if they are carrying Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, all that takes is an instant. Dam stuff put me in the hospital for a week with a 104 fever, you don't want that nasty stuff. Other nasty things they can carry as well...

I spray down with Deet! Had a bunch of Deer ticks on me last weekend in Grant Co. Turkeys can't smell so I apply liberally and often as I sweat a lot from running and gunning :D
