Anyone care to help! Swamp, marsh, and river bottom!
Hey everyone! We just purchased this land (50 acres) and are at a loss for trying to learn the best sites on this land. We have spent a lot of time and leather walking the land, but it seems that the deer just wander the property, and the deer we've stumbled on have been mostly luck. We have a few stands up, but it would be great to learn how everyone else out there would hunt this property.
I'm very curious what your thoughts are on:
1) Bedding - I've found very few beds, but maybe I don't know what I'm looking for exactly.
2) Stand Placement
3) Possible food plot locations
4) Possible funnels
We saw a fair amount of deer early season, but once the rut hit, all of the deer disappeared. I'm assuming our only real food sources are acorns (ton of oak trees) and the green vegetation that grows naturally.

That land isn't real far from me. If you want I'd take a walk around with you this spring.

wow- yea, absolutely! You must know the area well being able to tell just by where those two roads intersect! I'll try and make sure the water is low when we do! Thanks much for that offer!

Looks like a nice piece of property with plenty of potential for some habitat improvement. If it's all as open as that picture you took then it needs a lot of habitat work, but it should be easy to make improvements on. Getting a forester in there to look at logging it after you have a base plan would be a good start.
If I were closer I would love to walk it as it looks like it would be an easy property figure out and would be fun work on if you decided to do habitat work on.

Deerslayer - Most of the property is like this, I'd say maybe 60%. There are a few areas that are thicker, but they pop up here and there. When you are talking about habitat work, are you talking about planting certain grasses, cutting trees,....? We are very new to this river bottom area as we've always hunted farmland until now. Thanks

Also, any thoughts on turkeys here (if they would even be on this property with so much water)? We've had about 6 on trail cameras in the last 6 months.

Do some turkey scouting the beginning of april , a few mornings getting up high and listening for goobles will tell you the story on turkeys there or not.
They may not be wintering there , but may move in for the spring/summer.

That's cool of you Magic. You're in for a treat Matson. Magic is a good guy and a master tracker from our conversations. Not to mention, he is pretty dog gone funny.

Actually if you leave the coords on the bottom of the pic it's easy to find.
I live in wisconsin rapids so it's not that far away. I'll hook up with you after the snow is gone and we can walk it. I actually have a place to hunt that is real similar to your land. I have to get in there this spring as well. I'm just waiting for the snow to melt.

It could be planting grasses, but I doubt it in your situation. It would depend on your preferences though. More likely possibilities may be taking trees out, planting hard and soft mast trees (sometimes referred to as "tree plots") and/or shrubs. Also possibly planting trees for screening/wind breaks, planting browse/cover/screening shrubs, hinge cutting, making bedding areas and maybe some girdling.
All these things would depend on how much time and money you wanted to invest, but you can do a heck of a lot of good with just a chainsaw and a lot of sweat. Having it logged would be a good way to not only improve your property, but to also help fund your habitat improvements.
I would plant food plots in addition to your habitat manipulation too. I you were closer I would be happy to help, but I'm on the opposite side of Lake Michigan from you. I'm sure Magic will be helpful though.

post a topo map... That would be more help to me than the aerial.
Looks to me like grasses are going to take over if you log if its that open.

A forester can let him know what will likely happen with a given type of timber harvest or if he will need to plant things like Red Osier dogwood, swamp white oak, spicebush, swamp crabapple, etc.
Here is the topo you wanted to see Dan.

Hmmm... Topo didn't help much. Looks like a property that needs to be walked.

I shoot a lot of turkeys in swampy low land areas. I don't see why they wouldn't be in there.
