Scout 2/19/11

Unread postby Singing Bridge » Mon Feb 21, 2011 2:42 pm

Decided to get some scouting in before the big snowstorm hits, and headed out to cover some heavy pressure public land. I managed to get within forty yards of a decent buck in his primary bed, worn to the dirt, before he jumped off the back and into the swamp on his escape route. I spotted multiple rublines funneling into the bedding area and went into Beast stalk mode to get as close as I did. I spent a lot of time patterning him and looking for potential setups- a great day to be in the woods!

What a difference a day makes... it was the calm before the storm!

No, I forgot my tape- but that is why I took that picture. He's in great shape, when he jumped into the swamp I raced ahead to where I could get a good look at him. He's been chowing on red oak acorns, red osier dogwood and aspen whippets.

When I finished scouting the buck bedding area, I tracked the buck through the swamp- I wanted to see where he went. After about a quarter of a mile, he jumped from a bed on the end of a point that butts up against the swamp... good stuff.

SB, really cool post. Man I do not know how I missed this thread. It contains a lot of good info. I am heading out to scout tomorrow and will be scouring the landscape for my ever present nemesis.....a good old fashioned buck bed! :)

thanks for the scouting encouragement... the snow is beginning to disappear around here, and I am preparing for a large push of heavy scouting over the next couple of months.
