Orange Law

Unread postby Singing Bridge » Tue Mar 01, 2011 12:36 pm

Here in Michigan, during the gun deer season we are required to wear a hat, jacket, cap or vest of "highly visible hunter's orange". Fifty (50) percent or more of the garment in question is required to be orange. This year I wore an orange vest and hat... what's the law in your home state, and how much do you wear?

There is no "orange" law in NY. I go in full camo for every season. I feel like I stick out like a turd in a punch bowl when I wear orange.
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

orange definitely sticks out- did not know NY was orange free!

I think orange is a reasonable thing to wear here in Michigan during gun season on lower peninsula public land.

NY has no orange law?? Even during gun season??

Here in MN, the visible portion of our hat, and the outer clothing above our waist excluding sleeves and gloves must be orange during firearms and muzzleloader seasons. Small game hunting requires one article of orange above the waist.

I wear an orange stocking cap and a Realtree orange vest when required. I also have an orange overlay for my heater body suit for if I wear that during gun season.

I've got a couple of orange stocking caps myself. Your HBS is awesome for staying on stand for lengthy periods, those things do an excellent job in cold weather.

In Ohio you have to wear a vest, coat jacket or coveralls that are either solid hunter orange or camoflauge hunter orange.

This post made me think of something that happened when I was younger. We have a little hunting shack near Lake Tomahawk, WI and pretty much everything around us is public. There are two chunks mixed in there that are about 200 acres each that are private. The one guy (from illinois I may add) that owns one of the chunks of private land is not a hunter but always has a few of his buddies up that are deer hunting. Around noon on opening day every year he walks through his hunk of land banging a pot with a metal spoon in hopes of pushing deer to his buddies :? . Anyways, one day I was hunting near the property line of his land and I heard the deer drive rackett coming through the woods. All of a sudden here he emerges pot and spoon in hand wearing a dark brown coat and a rabbit fur bomber hat! I was speachless, before I could get any words out he turned and went back into the woods onto his land (I was sitting on a powerline). Some people I guess are very stupid........

After buying it and using it a couple times, I find myself wondering what the heck took me so long to get one! I wont hunt in cold weather again without it!

When I hunted Alabama years ago the law was you had to wear an orange hat to and from your stand, but not in it.

When my wife and i hunted mule deer in CO a couple years ago we brought our camo orange along only to find out that you have to wear solid orange, we wore our vests inside out the whole trip  saved having to drive back to town and buy new vests!

Is NY the only state that dosen't have an orange rule?

If you guys lived in NY, would you go in camo, or wear orange anyway?

And do you believe that deer can't see orange?

Funny story:

A bunch of us assembled for a deer hunt. We were all dressed in camo, except the one friend of ours who happens to be black. He showed up in full head to toe orange, hat, gloves and full suit. We were like, Timmy, why all the orange? He says, I don't want one of you hillbillies shooting the black guy and saying it was an accident!

Here in Indiana you have to have a minimum of 144 square inches of solid orange. Orange Camo even if head to toe is not acceptable for the states orange requirements. I don't really understand that, but I just wear my solid orange UA beanie so all is well.
