Great pic, Lou. How many trips back and forth on that elk?

I've got a few good friends that I trust, but they're often hours away when I take one down. It's a definite bonus when they're around.

I'm usually far from home as well. Wis won't let me cut em up.
I never complain about dragging! Dragging means I got one! :D

hours not days, it was a whole mile from camp I got lucky, shot it on the way back.

Mine was the second we hauled out on that hunt. The first was also a reduced task thanks to something else not mentioned.

Yes a horse, of course

I have a non hunting neighbor that has offered his services. It will probably only be a one time offer, though, I'm sure after one trip in that nasty stuff, he'll have "other" things to do if I ever call him again. But first, I got to knowck one down.

What I do to get them out of the thick stuff (that is were they are usually recovered). First I take the front legs and place them under the ears, then I take my bow rope, (3/8 braided rope) tie the ends together, fold it in half and then in half again, then make a slip knot and place it over the antlers or head with the front legs in the rope also. Then I get 3 ft stick, wrap the rope tight & tie off close to the deer (about a foot). With the deer tied up this close and the legs positioned under the head, you will be lifting up on the head and the front portion of the animal won't be getting snagged up on brush. Dragged many deer out of peat bog/tag alder swamps by my self like this. It really helps getting those legs forward and the head up to make the drag much easier. Only time I had troubles is when I shot a 9 point with a 4 inch drop tine. I couldn't believe how much crap that point got caught on!

I use a cart but I want to try the sled. It would be nice for going through the water and marsh. It would be pretty sweet if we had the option of quartering our deer here in WI, I think we need a change to our laws :)

I use a cart or a sled depending on the situation.

Quartering sure would be nice. It's about time WI changes this rule.

Marty,
That looks like a nice heavy duty sled. May I ask where you got it? It looks like some type of rescue sled with the straps on it.

Graingers. I think.

I owned a commercial roofing buisness years ago in a land far away.(NYC)

We did alot of high scaffold jobs, 300'+.
Kept that on site in case anyone needed was sick/injured and needed to be brought down.

I kept it, now its my deer huntin sled.

Yeah it was Graingers.

Kind of pricey to buy for a huntin sled.

Funny story.....

A few years back we were hunting in Ontario and probably two-miles from the road, when I let a guy in camp hunt one of my hotspots. He killed a huge bodied ten-point and needed help getting it out. We had a couple of new guys with us, so we trekked back in there after dark with them to retrieve it. To make a long story short, the wolves started howling in there and they hooked the rope up and practically ran the deer out of there skidding along behind them they were so scared! Funny as - but worked very well! The rest of the week they wouldn't leave the truck before it was daylight and were always back well before dark!

PLH

On the public in the UP we use a deer cart before the snow comes and a heavy duty sled if there is snow (usually hunting big woods ridges). Haven't had the need here in swamps of Wisconsin yet but I'm leaning towards getting a heavy duty sled for this year.
