Ok, I am hearing that bucks bed alone, so what can anyone tell me about batchelor groups. I have seen them come out to feed together.

Re: Batchelor groups
Ill try and take a stab at this one. From what i understand, they bed together during the summer and during the winter. But when the doe start coming into heat and there is competition, they split up. Also, i believe that the older a buck gets, the more likely it is to bed alone quicker. I could feed you some more B.S. but we will see what Dan and the rest say!!

Very good topic. I'm interested in this as well; I have located an area that has a nice bachelor group with several shooters in the group. I always wondered if they bedded together up on the ridge.

Re: Batchelor groups
It's hard to predict when "exactly" most of the bachelor groups break up here in Mich, sometimes in September, other times early October, etc. I've also observed a junior buck hang with an older buck off and on all season.
A couple of years ago I walked up on a late summer, still in velvet bachelor group by accident- 5 bucks traveling together that hadn't bedded down yet. Two were yearlings, two more were decent sized for public and there was one "big daddy". I was downwind of them and carefully followed them using cover for a while. I decided it was time to move on and walked up on them to gauge their reaction. All four of the smaller bucks busted out hard and fast to the west, but big daddy assumed a sneaking posture and trotted East using brushy thickets.

Yeah Dan whats up with this subject? I've seen bachelor groups out feeding together, but don't know much about the way they bed.

Re: Batchelor groups
They bed together from about may/june till about early September, on rare occasions early Oct as Bridge pointed out... Most truly mature bucks still seem to be loners... I think the bachelor groups tend to get away from the traditional buck bedding areas and bed more like the does do with each one bedding in a position to observe different directions. Honestly I have not observed many bedded bucks in the wild during the summer months, but the ones I have don't seem to be where bucks would bed come fall...

Re: Batchelor groups
it seems those bucks start paring up right about time those does start fawn dropping and breakup bout time the velvet falls off, at that point too much testosterone already to tolerate each other(every buck for himself) time to get breeding season under way.
