First of all I wouldn't want hunt 500 yards from someone, no less 50. I just think he meant to say upwind, cause why would you want the scent of another hunter blowing towards you. Plus if a buck was checking a known stand location from downwind, I think it would be at a distance further than 50 yards.

To answer the OP, I'd probably leave if the other hunter was parking there, as I hate hunting near other people if I know they're going to be there.

IMO.
Heavily used stands produce deer activity downwind of them.
Especially in early season when there is alot of cover.

I guess if you knew the other guy was using a known burnt out stand this might work.

50 yards seems a bit to close, but it is a good tactic in some cases. Bucks use there nose like we use our eyes... If a hunter uses the same stand several times a year, a couple years in a row, my scouting has shown that the deer activity and trails often circle around down wind of that spot...

I guess you'd be talking about a west or northwest (prevailing) wind as being downwind, as the wind could change daily?

I would not knowingly set up upwind of someone else.
There are guys here that leave stands out all year,and hunt them 3 times a week or more. When there is alot of cover the does sneak past these stands, downwind. IMO.

It's been my experience in the northwoods that people hunt very close to their vehicles, sometimes within sight of them, especially gun hunters who are not familiar with the area. Also minus opening day of gun season, morning hunting is almost non existent! People are deathly afraid of bears and wolves up there and a lot of them don't hunt early season with all the foilage because they may run into one of these beasts So usually where the masses hunt is where I don't go anyway

This is getting funny...

Here is a twist to the hunter on hunter. Someone I know nocked on a door to ask permission to hunt a monster buck we shined on the farm. This creepy looking guy answers the door by asking what he wants. My freind says "looking for hunting permission! Creepy Dude sticks his head out the door and looks around then says, you here alone? My friend says "yup"... Creepy looking Dude says "does anybody know your here?
Thats the point where my friend backed up got in his car and took off...
And thats a true story!
