Skinning a Muskrat

Unread postby chad » Mon Mar 15, 2010 9:18 am

Heres the Muskrat
Image
I start by hanging the 'rat by the tail, then cutting around both back legs above the foot.
Image
Image
Then cut up the middle on each side towards the tail.
Image
Now I cut both sides so I can start pealing down.
Image
Image
now I start peeling down.
Image
Image
Image
I keep pulling down as far as I can if the guts start to rip out I like to help it down, by cutting the areas that are hanging up.
Image
more pulling
Image
when I get to the front legs I poke my thumb or finger through the skin under the armpit and pull out the front leg
Image
Image
once both legs are out I continue to pull to the head
Image
now I cut around the head and cut the ears, and eyes and continue down until you cut the nose off...
Image
Image
Image
done with skinning!
Image
Now it's time to flesh......
I start by putting the skinned 'rat on a fleshing beam..
Image
Then I use my fleshing knife to scrape any fat or meat off the pelt
Image
Image
once we get all the fat off we have to stretch and dry it, I use wire muskrat stretchers....
Image
Image
we pull it tight and pin it, but we don't overstrech it!
Image
Image
All done, now we hang it and let it dry for a couple days! 8-)

So how long does it take you to do one?

We just had our outdoor show in my county, they have the World Championship Muskrat Skinning Contest as part of it. Winner normally skins 5 rats in just under a minute! They use some special speed cuts, I think the fastest I ever got when I trapped was a rat a minute if I really tried.

Awesome thread dude!
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

Do you make Muskrat stew or roast the rest?

Rat Jerky or Rat Sausage??

VERY NICE walk through - much appreciated.

Have you ever tanned the hide? I know there's the old Deer Hide Tanning method that uses deer brains, but I don't know the ins and outs.

Care to share if you do? I want to do a Beaver Pelt next winter - he lives right behind my house and he's HUGE

that is very interesting. I dont think I could ever learn to skin one in a minute.

And that meat does look good, I was thinking of grinding it when I saw it, otherwise I dont think I could get my wife and daughter to eat it.
