Slider, remember that a spiker is more than likely the same age as a 6 pointer. If you want to kill your 1st buck, kill the first one that gives you a good opportunity.
At this stage of your bowhunting career you need to kill, so kill as many legal deer as you can. Every kill is a life lesson and will prepare you for all future opportunity. This really can't be emphasized enough.
Good Luck !
Thanks AB, Yea I was just telling my buddy the other day that no matter what I shoot it will be a trophy to me. I have shot a few with the gun, but nothing with the bow. If I shoot a doe with my bow I will be as excited and taking pics like I shot a booner

Slider, don't get caught up in worrying about how big your buck is or think about being embarassed by it- every buck taken with a bow is a trophy in my opinion. Take your bow and go get your buck, I will be as fired up for you as I will be for any 150 incher posted on this forum!!!
I agree!! A trophy is in the eye of the beholder!! Especially when it comes to archery!!

to me right now, any buck 2.5 year old and older would get slain, celebrated and rack nailed to the wall.

In the past I went as long as 5 years without a buck because of this. I am O.K. with this since I have shot enough smaller bucks and really don't feel the need to shoot them anymore. If I need some meat I just shoot some does.
My views have really changed since 2010!
Back when I posted this big bucks were running around everywhere it seemed. Now I am not setting a size limit but just trying to kill a good buck that represents the area I am hunting well. Been seeing plenty of good bucks lately but nothing near the average size back when this thread was started.

No real size/age limitations for me. I will usually pass 1 and 2 y.o, but if I have a 2 y.o get out of a bed I setup on I will probably whack him.......maybe.
Whatever trips my trigger. Usually I see so few good bucks it is not a hard decision to make.

I believe any buck shot is a trophy to the beholder.
For me I think anything in the 125 inch or higher is definitely a public land trophy.
My opinion is based on state of Wisconsin areas I can hunt.

If I am excited when the animal is coming in it is a trophy to me. These days that would most likely make it a 3.5yr old.

Re: What's a public land trophy to you?
Still happy to take something around 120 and 3.5 year of age on public land. The good new for me (or bad) is there aren't a whole lot 2 year old that get close to that number in the bigwoods so usually when I see something decent it is an older buck that I am very happy to take. Anything larger is gravy.
