A Hunter's Horror Story

Unread postby Stuart » Sun Oct 24, 2010 8:12 am

I went into a new part of an overgrown apple orchard one week ago and saw a doe cross just out of range because of thick brush. I was passing on does the entire season but my father said we need some meat in the freezer, so the next time you get a chance shoot, shoot (I am only 16).

So the next time I went in with my lone wolf on my back as normal (I always mobile hunt) and set-up 50 yards further. The 3 does came out and shot the one in my shooting lane and I got all the action on my ROSCOBY RISER CAM.

Things couldn't be better!!!

I got my father and we took up the trail but found little blood so backed out until the next morning.

As a sleepless night came to an end my father and I looked the next morning and couldn't find the deer anywhere because of small blood trail. But it was a good hit and looked at the footage on the computer the night of the hunt.

We told the land owner what had happened and he must of been having a bad day because he told us to never hunt at his farm ever again!!! I was so overwhelmed about the hunt and now this, I didn't know what to think!!!

My father has deer and moose hunted with this man for 25 years.

This was out main property to hunt out of this year so the hunting season could be done for us. So if you think you have it bad think of me!

All I can say is public land next year!

I generally say honesty is a good policy but sometimes if they don't ask, I don't tell. I'd go talk to him again with your dad, hopefully he was just in a bad mood and he'll realize that it was an accident and can happen to anyone.

Thats to bad Stuart... Don't give up. Hunt the public, or nock on some doors. You could try apologizing and explaining the situation to the landowner. But maybe your father should do that cause of the time he has known the man.

That really sucks!! I can't believe that he would do that to a 16 year old especially considering your dad hunted with him for 25 years.:?
Hopefully your dad can patch things up!

Wow give the guy some time and have your dad talk to him. Like you said, maybe he was having a bad day and will come around.

WOW that really bites!!! I hope he thinks real hard what he just did because that just bites the big one. Wow when he was 16 you think he ever lost a deer? It happens to almost everyone sooner or later. GOOD luck!!

Thanks guys but I will try to make the best of my season because the rut is just around the corner and could still make things happen.

If you do maybe apologize again and he may have had a change of heart. Maybe after thinking about it he realized that maybe he didn't exactly handle the situation correctly.

When I read " A Hunters Horror Story" I cringed thinking someone had fallen from a tree and was badly injured. Glad to know no one was hurt. While it may hurt to lose a hunting spot it is not the end of the world. Be thankful for the time you were able to hunt it and thank him for that. I always feel that when one door shuts on me a better one will come along and it usually does.

Dabow has a good point. When one closes another opportunity usually opens.

We have all lost and gained hunting spots. Keep your chin up Stuart.

Great advise guys, I can only learn from the experience and come back next year even stronger!

By the way Lou, your stealth strips helped me on every hunt and had some of the best hunts of my life mobile!
