congrats on the doe Sam and earning your buck tag. Props to your wife for lending a hand, even when the yotes were too close for comfort.

Thanks guys. I thought I'd share this pic from yesterday evening. To my left is a corn field and if you look closely, you'll see my shadow from my treestand - the sun was setting so nicely. Took the pic with my cell phone, so the res isn't too great. Photo of the doe to come.

Congrats on the doe Sam, it must be a strange feeling having all the 'yotes by you as you are dragging out fresh meat.

I could write a book of funny stories of all the strange things that have happened hunting and fishing, I get a few new ones every year! My wife and kids really get a kick out of my mishaps.

With Rifle season coming in this weekend....and countinuing until the end of hunting season in general I finally got a good wind to hunt what I consider my prime spot. Weather was nearly perfect too. I didnt scout this spot beast style b/c I had yet to pick up dvds.Ive hunted close to this area 2yrs and made a plan of solid evidence and pressumed the rest. So the plan was to go out of the way pass the presumed bedding and walk up wind of the bed. Well by not having all the pieces put together I ended up stumbling right on one of his beds. Lets just say game over. I'll have to rethink this setup up and hold off until the rut I suppose. Ended up seeing 8 nannies and the it seemed as if the whole herd passed by at dark.Valuable lesson learned the hard way.

Oct. 5th...
The wind was perfect tonight for a bedding area I have been wanting to hunt up against. Me and my hunting buddy Dave have been after a big 8 pointer that has been bedding here every year now for about four or five years... Needless to say he is getting pretty old. Every year we only see him one or twice, but its enough to keep us interested.
Where I wanted to set up was the back side of the bedding point cause this year there is no food to the front side. It is really tough getting back there cause its access is a ridge of timber with dry leaves and tons of dry branches. I really took my time and carefully placed every step and looked ahead planning my rought to the tree I needed to be in.
The tree was only about 45 yards from the buck bed.
The bed was in high grass and briars along a swamp transition line.
I got the stand hung as quiet as possible and climbed in to wait.
Nothing but squirrels and a big fat raccoon moved thru.
Then with only about 15 minutes of light, I heard the buck rise from his bed and start to move in the grass. I got ready, but then it sounded like he was heading off the other way. I heard something behind me and glanced over to see the coon still hanging around and when I glanced back over the big 8 pointer was standing broadside in an opening 25 yards away. His tines are much shorter this year, but his rack is massive and very heavy. I drew the bow and settled the pin behind the shoulder and just started touching off the trigger on the release when he turned in my direction and started walking straight at me. Then he turned to his left into some thick cover and started working over a tree at about 20 yards. He worked on that poor tree / bush for a long time, maybe a couple minutes. Light was fading fast and I was getting worried when he finally stepped away from the tree and started heading towards me again.
Two more steps and he would of been dead, but at 10 yards he froze just before an opening I could shoot him at. Then suddenly he bolted.
The wind had changed and my low set up blew my stank right to him.
As he trotted away, I whistled and almost got him to stop in a shooting lane... But, he stopped just the other side. I think I saw him smile as he flicked his tail and walked away. 8-)
I just might shed a tear if I ever do kill that old beast... ;)

Within a fraction of a second of releasing the arrow when he turned! He can't get much closer to dead than that!

Been there myself a few times!! A few years back I had a 150" 10 point on a trail coming directly past me at about 15 yards and just as I was going to hit the trigger on my release he turned to chase a doe. He went from a dead deer to no chance at any shot in a split second. I was heart broken!! Never did see that buck again!
Dan, I sure hope you get a chance at that old boy before he dies of old age!!

Took this picture back at the truck. . . I was sweating like Mike Tyson and face flushed like Santa Clause. Thought I was gonna die, so I had Christie take the picture fast in case I did. I lived AND I got a picture out of it ;)

Nice Doe Sam! Congrats!

Hey Dan, will you give that spot another try in a couple weeks or so hoping he calms down and comes back? Or do you think you lost your chance at that bedding area?

Probably blew my chance for early season. I will likely leave it alone the rest of the year. Too open to set up there late season, but maybe.
