Acorns dropping
I had noticed a few acorns dropping last week already. But the last few days they have really started to fall here in SE
Wisconsin.
Wisconsin.

Re: Acorns dropping
Yea its looking like we should have a good crop this year! Which means marshes should pay off better than hill country this year early season.
In marsh terrain they bed low and stage at the acorns. In hill country they bed on the points right under oak trees and eat acorns till dark before heading out a lot of the time...

they are dropping like crazy in my yard. I think the squirrels are helping the situation.

Re: Acorns dropping
We seem to have a pretty good crop of acorns going here in MidMichgan as well. A lot of green, red oak acorns are falling hard here.
They definitely don't seem to like them as well when they are green, especially the red oak acorns- they have higher levels of tannins in them than the white, and when green they are at their highest point. Rain / UV and soil exposure will help a little with leaching the tannins out as the days pass, but they are still nasty compared to a mature acorn. Nontheless, I'm watching turkeys pound the green acorns here on a daily basis.

Re: Acorns dropping
I'm watching the deer here eat a few of the green, red oak acorns too- they just don't seem anywhere near as fired up about them as the turkeys are right now. I'm sure that will change before long.

Re: Acorns dropping
So, in relation to Hill Country and hunting near buck beds....do you think a good acorn crop or tree dropping alot of acorns near a bucks bed gives the hunter a better chance of killing him by sneaking near his bed / close to the good acorn source assuming that he'll mill around more near his bed gorging himself on acorns? rather than setting up on his exact bed and counting on shooting him coming back to it?
Has anyone just picked a good point (either from a topo or experience hunting that ground) and slipped in before dark setting up in or near a good acorn producing tree and had success??

Re: Acorns dropping
If I was going to hunt right in the bedding area, I would post right over the bed rather than at the oak tree. My earlier refferance was about evening hunting rather than mornings.
