You Just Seen a 160...

You just seen a 165"+ go by your stand at 100 yards chasing a doe. There's a chance he might chase the doe within range, but you don't see him anymore. Just then a 145" buck pops out 20 yards away. Do you shoot the smaller buck, knowing a bigger one is in the timber with you somewhere, or take what you can get, and be happy?

Not much difference between 150 & 160... I would probably take the smaller buck and then if hunting here with no limits, continue to hunt the 160... If it were a one buck area I would go on to hunt another state or area and continue the hunt.

I would shoot the smaller one and be happy with that.

I shoot the smaller 145-150" buck since I hunt public land and know I may not get a chance at the other buck again. If a good shot presents itself I will shoot the smaller one for sure.
Hopefully the larger buck will make it until next year.

I should have said more like a 165" or a 145". I meant to have a 15-20" difference in size. Which is very noticable.

That would make the decision harder Spy... And then it would depend totally on on the property I was hunting, how well I know that property, how long I have to hunt that property etc...
To me a 140/145 inch buck is pretty average, but once you start getting near 160 its a pretty good buck worthy of waiting for.

is the smaller buck an eight or ten point?
that might sway the decision alittle more.

I would shoot the smaller one if they were both standing at 20 yards and the little one had a slightly better shot.

what Dan said pretty much. Very area/time dependent. Then again if it was my first day on an out of state hunt, I might pass....so many variables. Having been lucky enough to have shot several deer in the 140's range my standards have increased some which also affects the decision. 10 years ago with a much smaller wall of heads I would shoot the 140's buck everytime everywhere. Today its much more complicated decision process. Good ? Spysar.

I'm going to assume that both deer are same amount of points and are both 10 pointers. Where I hunt I'd pass the 145 and hope for the best.

Like Muddy; assuming that both a equal points. I would only pass assuming that I have a month left to hunt. With two weeks left and knowing that the 160" might be there for rifle season, I would shoot.

Depending on how much time I had left In the season would be the big one for me. If time wasn't a factor and I thought I had a real legitimate chance at getting the bigger buck I'd pass on the 140's buck "I think".

In that situation I would whack the 145"... and with my luck the 165 would walk by at ten yards right after that.
