Public Land Ratios

Unread postby buck_junkie » Mon Jul 26, 2010 4:39 pm

This is to all you dedicated public land hunters like myself...What kind of deer density do some of you guys have in your hunting areas? Here ours is rather low, but we have an outstanding genetically superior herd (in my opinion). Also, what kind of ratios does the same land exhibit? I'm just trying to compare apples to apples here to see how our small public parcel of land stands with some of your properties.

In S.E. Wisconsin the deer numbers and mature buck numbers used to be great, but now they both suck after 10 years of the Wisconsin DNR pounding the herd with unlimeted kill tags.
We still got some good hunting in South Western and South Central Wisconsin, but even that is taking a hit.

Deer numbers are pretty high. We have a lot of does but have a pretty small mature buck population and the genetics are not very good. Our average 2.5 year old bucks are around 80 inches while the average 3.5 year old buck might go 105-110 or so. So to get to any really large antlered bucks (for our area) you really have to find and kill 4.5+ year old bucks.

Anywhere from 40 deer per sq. mile where I hunt here in Michigan to 8-10 per sq. mile where I hunt in Kentucky. ;)

My home county public land hunting in Michigan is very similar in structure and antler growth to what virginiashadow stated he has in his- lots of does, few mature bucks and poor antler growth.

The sex ratios are very imbalanced here in southwest Michigan on public land. Way too many does in most areas and very few mature bucks. 90%+ 1 1/2 yr old buck harvest here annually. I have started to look for parcels with low deer numbers, since most hunters see this and look for the areas that are packed with deer and set-up stands there. The areas I choose have Low deer numbers = low hunter numbers = better chances of a mature buck existing in there.
