Big buck sighted...
I was driving home at about 4pm today when Carol spotted a big buck... Seeing one around here in the midday blistering sun is rare. I figured the thick area he was in was his bedding area and from 100 yards away I watched him without him knowing I was there... Within a few minutes he bedded back down from his midday stretch.
The most interesting thing about his bedding spot of choice is that it was less than 10 yards from the road. Wind was blowing from the road thru some very thick brush and over his back while he faced down wind. He was also 30 yards behind an old barn that just gets used for storage now....
The property gets pounded during the season. But NOBODY ever hunts this small patch behind the barn.

Re: Big buck sighted...
Its so funny you mention a story like that Dan, because the same thing happened to me. A few days ago I spotted a 140 and a very wide 160 class buck on my way out to my farm to relocate trail cameras. The time of day: 11:00AM. They were on our neighbors land who do bowhunt only no gun. They came out into a soybean field for a midday lunch. Wind was blowing 5-10 mph in their faces from where they came from. I video taped them too got some great footage at 11AM. I always have that cam recorder on me....

Excellent news! So private land, but you have permission next door?
So how big was he, anyways? Good eyes, Carol.

Re: Big buck sighted...
I see this happen alot thru late july and aug. Big mature bucks eating beans at mid day and their beds are close by. Usually within a 100 yards of a road, and everyone walks right past it to go to their hunting area. Ive killed many deer within a 100 yards of my truck and laugh as 10+ people walk deep in the woods where they've got pics at midnight from these deer, not knowing they're bedding next to the road.

Re: Big buck sighted...
Dan if you could hunt this spot how would you go about it. Would you keep tabs on him the rest of summer trying not to bump him. How would you set up on him, trying to get close for a afternoon hunt. Or would you try to pick a trail that he might come out on in the afternoon. I have no idea where this is, just like to hear how you would go about this. Didn'T you say once you hunted a big buck years ago not far from the road (300# slob?) Is this common with bigger deer. When they bed this close are they crossing the road at night to eat, or staying on the side they bed to eat and just feel safe at this bedding location.

So Carol is the secret behind the big bucks.....
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

The secrets out!
Beuford, this bedding area is only about 60 feet by 30 feet of thick surrounded by open. If the buck were still bedding there during season and if I had permission, I would likely attack him in the morning or try a stalk on his bed from a cross wind.
Yes... Its a common trait in big bucks to bed exactly where you don't expect them which is often an overlooked brush pile next to the road or behind an old barn where people don't tread much.
