Fall Turkey

Unread postby Uncle Lou » Sat Jul 10, 2010 12:04 pm

I am always promoting Michigan, especially deer and turkey because we have so many and our tags are easy to obtain and relatively cheap.

Our fall southern Michigan private land tag quota shouldnt sell out and lasts Sep 15-Nov14. So psuedo over the counter

The UP Unit M never sells out either, so also psuedo over the counter.

Anyone else chase them in the fall specifically, or do you just get a tag to try one if one comes by while bowhunting deer?

Fall turkey hunting is alot easier than the spring hunt here in Wisconsin if you ask me. They are grouped up and so much easier to pattern.
Typically I scout them out while sitting on stand. Then when the time is right, I just ambush one. LOL!

Since I shot my first bird with a bow this past spring, I'm not sure I will ever pick up a gun to hunt them again. So I will be after one with the bow this fall.

How many of you hear them gobbling in the fall? I hear it quite often. And they are very "callable" during the fall too, contrary to what most people believe. I know alot of people will bust up a group, then call them in. But I've found that you don't even need to bust them up. A raspy hen call will get them to come in.

I never even thought about trying that in fall but I will this year if I get a tag. Still trying to get my first turkey with the bow.
I usually just bowhunt for deer in the fall and carry my turkey tag with me in case turkeys just happen to come past.

I think you will really enjoy it. We'll be looking forward to hearing all about it...seems like fall is so far away right now. But hopefully the summer will fly by and we'll all be chasing birds and bucks very soon! I'll be wishing you lots of luck!

I am an old fall hunter from way back :D , we used to drive them like deer. Then I advanced to calling them and i will agree with Sherry they can be easier than spring birds, but a mature gobbler can often be more of a challenge in the fall as opposed to spring.

In the past few years bowhunting deer and other big game has taken me away from specifically targeting fall birds, but if I get a chance this fall I may make a few specific hunts for them again......If not I always have a tag or two in my pocket while deer hunting if the opportunity presents itself. 8-)

Recieved my Fall Permit Award card in the mail yesterday... How long before they start selling them as left overs? I better get in and buy mine - sooner the better.

Fall turkey hunting for me is shooting one of the many that walks past my deer stand on almost every hunt.

Quick update on MI Fall Turkey.
http://www.grandviewoutdoors.com/turkey-hunting/articlecontent/8/2010/1184/michigan-fall-turkey-hunting-licenses-still-available

Without looking the UP will not be sold out and our southern lower peninsula is also not sold out.

I dont know where I saw the other day - I think Michigan WoodsNWater - that we can buy a tag a day until they sell out.

I have been hunting turkeys for some time and never do I remember being able to get more than one tag per hunter, with one minor exception (one zone in the fall years ago and they would give you one extra tag with purchase of one tag)

Are you allowed to shoot hens in the fall? Busting a flock up is about the easiest way I've ever found to shoot a turkey. Bust 'em up, walk in the direction most of 'em flew, sit down and do the kee kee call, and get ready to shoot.

yes Muddy. In the past they have put it right in the turkey guide that they encourage shooting hens to trim the flock going into winter.

I love those little 6-8 pounders in the fall, they are delicious, always wished we could shoot two of them.

Maybe this is the year.

I also like to hunt them that way Muddy

I have had my fall permit award card on my fridge for two weeks - keep forgetting the darn thing :(

Tags aren't gonna sell out before I buy the one I was awarded, will they? Or do they assume if you haven't purchased it by a certain date, you never will?

Sam, I believe if you were awarded one, you can by it anytime, it is counted against the permits for the zone you applied for, and is reserved for you. They only sell left over permits over the counter, so even if the left overs sell out, you can still buy yours.
