That's what I'm thinking. Not a big lightning strike but a smal static lightning strike.

As a kid I remember our neighbors tree got struck by lightning and it looked similar to that. What throws my off is the size of the tree.

I was thinking lightning too but it looks too clean. I am just throwing this out there but maybe, due to the location of the tree and it being wet, maybe the tree couldn't dump it's sap down into it's roots because it was water logged, and the result is the sap freezing and bursting the bark in random places. My only guess besides lightning.
It's not a problem, it's a opportunity for a solution.
