Deer tactic's... Stopping deer for the shot?

Unread postby dan » Thu Apr 29, 2010 1:16 pm

You have a nice shooter buck by your standards passing your stand in your shooting lane. You have a 15 yard area wide open to shoot him in. Do you whistle or grunt to stop him? Or shoot him walking?

I cant vote on this one. It depends how fast he is going. Fast walk he is getting stopped. If he is just milling through I'd give him time to stop on his own since there is such a big shooting lane.

I am with you Casper...It all depends on the speed of the walk...

I'd only try to stop him if I felt I couldn't make an acurrate shot while he was moving.

I agree. I would rather not get him than wound him. I don't like a deer going to waste because I didn't wait for a shot I wasn't 100% sure of a quick clean kill and it really bothers me when a deer suffers for the same reason. JMO

I shoot them walking and recover them without difficulty- if he's going too fast I'll try to stop him. A couple of extra thoughts- opinions vary, and there are those that bleat or grunt to stop a buck on heavy pressure public land that state they've never had the buck spook. My experiences are quite different. About half the time a soft bleat/ doe grunt or grunt from up in a tree has my heavy pressure bucks blowing out for the next escape zone as fast as he can get there (they don't usually hear that from up in trees)... the other half they stop but are on high alert, another problem in itself- you'd better be ready to shoot right at the exact moment he stops. And finally, I've had many buck encounters in late October / early November where the buck is cruising between doe areas or scent trailing one- they are covering ground almost at a trot and couldn't care less about you grunting / bleating / yelling / screaming (you get the idea). They aren't going to stop (amazing they can be that reckless, but they've got one thing on their mind). IMO you need to be proficient enough with your bow or gun to take these bucks- or sit it out and / or pass the shots.

I always try to stop them with a soft fawn bleat (sort of a high pitched "neeee" sound, but soft.
I have not had enough practice to try to shoot one walking. Perhaps I should work on that, but at the same time, I have never spooked a deer by making that sound and stopping them.

Prefer to stop and pop. However, if it is a shot say within 12-15 yards, I will shoot em on a slow walk. If the deer is walking average speed and is out to 20+ yards, I ain't shootin.

I like to shot them walking. I pull ahead of them and let them walk into my pin. That way it's really the same as a standing shot. I always prefer to shoot when they are relaxed vs. on edge.
I shot a doe one time that was walking right thru the ribs and she never broke stride. She walked about 30 yds., got wobbly and laid down and died. She never knew she was hurt.

I would take, have taken 15 yard walking shots. With a modern compound bow set-up, if they are just walking and it is open, at that range there's little point in stopping them, even if you are not the best shot in the world. Just let them walk into the pin like magic said. At 25 yards I would probably try a subtle "maah" to stop the deer.

With
that much room to work with, I'd shoot him walking.
