Porkapalooza 2014

Unread postby Redman232 » Tue Feb 25, 2014 3:15 am

My buddies and I are headed down to N. Alabama on Friday to partake in our annual backpack/hog hunt. Any beast member who wants to make the trip are welcome, it's public land and Non Resident small game license is $43.00. Can't beat it for the price. I love venison but it doesn't come close to free pork.

8-)
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

We had a great time, weather was great, upper 60's and breezy. We started seeing pigs about 1/2 hr into our first hunt that saturday morning. Saturday afternoon I walked right up on a big boar (I assume by the size). I had him trapped on a terrace on the side of a hill, with a rock face below and above us. There was nowhere for him (or me) to go. He was bedded down in a downed tree top. I had time to shoot him once in the neck before he jumped off the cliff. He tumbled out the bottom (approximately 20 feet below) and I plugged him again. He got up and took off, he ran into a couple of trees and I shot two more times, both were misses I believe. I collapsed on the hillside, I was pretty shook up after I processed what had just taken place. If he had decided to charge I would have been in trouble. We tracked that big sucker for about 300 yards. He went down the hill and up into a ridge covered in rock outcrops. We finally lost blood and I started to cramp up. We were about 6 miles from the truck so I told my dad, we had better get out of there or he was going to be carrying me. Sunday morning the other group of guys (we were hunting in parties of 3 to 5 guys) were walking up a hill and ran into a sounder. There were a few good size sows and a bunch of 10# piglets, they let loose on them, they shot roughly 35 rounds from a 45/70, 12gauge with deer slugs and an AR 15. They had blood trails all over and ended up carrying out a 150# sow and two of the little piglets. My group saw a few more that afternoon. Monday morning was cold and wet a few of the guys got wet overnight and packed up to leave. I was helping them carry stuff to the truck and I went across the road to use the bathroom and had two little sows sneak up on me with my pants around my ankles, I was able to get my side arm and get off two shots before they took off but I missed high. All in all it was another great trip, I personally saw 17 hogs and as a group of 8 we saw around 40 total, which is great considering the first year we didn't see any and last year we saw about 20. So either they are getting more hogs or we are getting better and starting to figure it out. I'll add pictures later.

The only pictures I took are of a couple of spots along the blood trail from the hog that wasn't recovered. There are pictures on here from our 2013 trip, thread was called DIY Public Land Hogs.
