As many of you know Wisconsin had a LOT of left over turkey tags this year. My wife and I hunt in zone 5 (my in-laws land is crawling with turkeys) and we both drew tags. Then on August 27th the leftovers went on sale at noon. We both got another. At midnight, the DNR site refreshed and we both scored another. I got one more the following day LOL.
We went out to scout the land we would be hunting to find the trails the birds were using. After a month or so of patterning them with trail cameras we went out hunting out of a double bull ground blind set up about 15 yards off the trail. A typical Saturday in Langlade County yielded a lot of gunshots in the distance and little animal movement. Then the weather turned in our favor. It started raining lightly. Soon all the gunshots stopped and the woods became tranquil.
After a few hours, I saw a turkey up the trail, then another, then a few more. My wife and I turned on our sight lights and got ready. The one out front was a male. I put an arrow in him and he went 20 yards and died. My wife whispered, "wanna go for a double?" I nodded. About 30 seconds later I had a Hen in my sights and shot. All I heard was the arrow hitting a tree. After looking down I saw I nicked the blind so I thought the arrow went high but the hen still ran off. A few minutes later my wife had her sights on a hen and she drilled it. The hen didn't even make it one foot. The remaining few hens started fighting! (weird for fall I thought) but I used the commotion to draw my bow again. Another minute or so went by and I wanted my double after my miss. The hens calmed down and I got one.
After all this excitement, we went out to collect and tag our birds. We found all 4 arrows and all three turkeys. After inspecting my "miss" arrow, it had blood on it. a 25 yard blood trail later, there was my hen I thought I missed! I hit her square in the heart!
It was an awesome day and an awesome hunt.
for the TLDR crowd: Fall turkeys have very set patterns and sometimes walk by a blind single file (if you know where to set it up).

More beard and Spring = Win.
I have yet to kill a spring bird. My wife and I have been close to some big toms but not close enough. I scored permission on a farm property for this spring so I hope our luck will change.

Re: Fall Turkey Hunt to remember
Awesome hunt! I was disappointed to find out that MN only sells surplus tags to those who had applied for the hunt back in June or July, which I didn't do. I've snuck up within 20 yards on 5 different turkeys leaving the duck hunts this fall on public. O well.
