Opening Day WI Tom

Unread postby solocam88 » Sat Apr 16, 2011 4:15 am

I got out early opening morning and heard a lot of gobbles on the roost, but the birds shut up as soon as they hit the ground. I hunted until 10am and decided it was time to make a move. Long story short I was planning on self-fiming run and gun with the bow, but had to jump in my ground blind to avoid spooking the birds that started gobbling right were I was looking to go. I setup my decoys, called once with no answer, and a few more times for about ten mins with no answers. I knew one of two things happened, either I spooked them or they were coming in silent across the marsh. after about ten mins I yelped and three toms hammered back 150 yards away and I could see them coming full strut through the brush. It didn't take them long to make their way up to my decoys and I sent a spitfire at the first one to give me a good shot. He hit the ground in his tracks and never moved. The other two just kept strutting and gobbling on top of him and pecked his head apart. Thats the great thing about shooting them with the bow is they have no idea what happened they just think their buddy is taking a nap. The weather has turned bad so I knew Wed was gonna be my best chance at filling my tag and Im glad I filled it when I did. I self-filmed this hunt and got some awesome footage. Watch for this hunt on a future Hunting Beast DVD 8-) .
