Will you kill a jake this spring?
Just wondering what you all think about killing a jake rather than waiting out for a Tom.
Personally I have taken 3 jakes and 2 Toms in 10 years of turkey hunting my biggest Tom last year. I have passed up jakes in the past only to go home eating my tag. As of right now Im going to hold out for the longbeard. But we will see how things go. I tend to get itchy finger on the last day of the hunt.

Re: Will you kill a jake this spring?
I put depends. I have turkey hunted a few times and have yet to kill a bird (I choked and hesistated last spring oh well). The first time I am hunting is period 4 and I'm hunting with a friends brother who is an expert caller. He is running the camera and calling and we will be in a blind and I want to try to stick one with my bow. I think in that situation anything I can put an arrow through is going to get it. I have a tag for the 6th period too on a city farm in a suburb of the milwaukee area. The turkeys get little pressure and there are some BIG toms I think I will hold out for. I have noticed the turkeys aren't vocal at all there I am not sure if it's because of the city noise or what they just don't call or respond to calls so it will probably be run and gun with the camera rolling hopefully and the shotgun for weapon of choice.

Re: Will you kill a jake this spring?
I've killed double digits of mature gobblers and probably almost as many jakes over the years when i used to shotgun hunt. Now that I am all archery I have no problem punching my tag on a jake, but it depends on how many shortbeards I am seeing any given spring. If the number is low (less than 5 while scouting my properties) I will hold out for a mature bird simply because if the number of jakes are low any given year, the number of mouthy 2 year olds will be low the following year. And we all like to hear em gobble plus 2 year olds are much easier to kill (for family members and for video).

Archery hunting maybe, gun hunting no.
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

I've always held out for a Tom, so I voted Tom only. But I'm not really sure why , just always have. I've let many jakes walk. I use a gun though, and if I were using a bow, I would definately take a jake, if the oppurtunity presented it self. So, I really should have voted it depends on the situation.

Re: Will you kill a jake this spring?
i shot a jake once... was happy, but I REALLY hunt turkeys for the gobble, beards, spurs, and fans.... jakes have NONE of these... unless you call the choked up attempt a gobble? and feathers of different size a fan? I do not.
Although i WILL shoot a jake, and would have many times when I go hunting and cant get a bird to talk while running and gunning.... but usually on thojse days I dont see any turkeys, much less a jake.
If I hump 4 miles for 4 hours... and a jake comes in, hes DEAD... but I hunt to kill mature gobblers just like I deer hunt to kill mature bucks.
Anything else isnt that great of a feeling to me...

Re: Will you kill a jake this spring?
I am relatively new to turkey hunting and took a 26lb tom with my bow at 5 yards last spring, but ate tag soup the first couple years. So yes! if i get a good shot on a jake I will be sending a shaft his way

Going for a LONG beard, as I have seen some really nice long beards in my hunting area this winter.

If I can get a crack at one with the bow I will, otherwise I will hold out for a longbeard.

Re: Will you kill a jake this spring?
Yes I will kill a jake. Wish we could get more than 1 spring tag in MI, or I would kill multiple jakes. Before I go without tasty wild turkey meat, and with all the turkeys around here, I will happily kill a jake.

Re: Will you kill a jake this spring?
Heck ya I will shoot a Jake, after killing many Toms with the shotgun I went bow only 5 years ago. I will shoot any legal bird with my bow, I have only shot 4 with the bow so I am not picky, YET. Good luck to all this spring and have a blast.

Re: Will you kill a jake this spring?
No jakes here...we have a ton of turkeys and I really only target long beards. I guess it is similar to hunting in the big buck states...you wouldnt shoot a spike there.
