Colton's Ohio Bird

Unread postby cspot » Mon Apr 20, 2020 3:49 am

Went down to camp this weekend for the youth turkey season in OHio. We hunted Saturday and while we heard a few birds, we never really got one to work. Tried to roost one last night but didn't hear anything. Decided to go this morning to where we heard 2 birds on the roost on Saturday morning. Downside was that it was over a mile (one way) walk down and back up the mountain to get there.

It was getting pretty light this morning and we still had yet to hear a bird. I finally decided to call a couple of times and nothing. Called a couple more times and they finally opened up. We moved up the hill some and setup. They were a couple hundred yards away on roost on a point. We were on the next point across a small hollow from them. I didn't want to move anymore as I was worried about getting picked off and we were where they went on Saturday morning. There was a lot of fresh scratching and some feathers on the ground. We were on the same bench as them and I expected them to fly down and work around the hollow to us. I called a few times to them on the roost and they always responded right back. Sounded like a jake and a tom. The ended up flying across to us and probably landed about 50 yards down over the hill. We couldn't see them but could hear them drumming and they gobbled a couple of times. It probably wasn't 10-15 seconds and this bird came on a quick walk right towards us. Unfortunately it was a little to Colton's right and there was no cover between us and them. The bird was going to be in our lap in a few seconds. He moved to get on him and the bird turned and started walking to the side of us. Colton dropped him at 13 yards.

PS. took a pic with the new call from Kip that we used to call him in.
