Turkeys 3 Lou 0

Unread postby Uncle Lou » Tue May 21, 2019 2:25 pm

I've been out doing my chase them down hunting 3 times in the late season on state land. I have not won.

First trip out was scouting and saw some nice fields on Monday the 13th. Then on the 15th and 16th tried a couple mornings. Found a tom in the field right next to where I parked. After an hour and a half loop around he was gone by time I tried to get in front of where I thought he was heading. Then another stalk after walking about 5 miles that day heading back to the truck. A perfect cut off hunt if he wouldn't have seen me before running down a hill to head him off.

Then the next morning two toms in a rye field. Tried another loop around to crawl up a hill and shoot one of them in the face. But a couple deer wanted to bust me on that loop before I got to the stalk up the hill. The deer likely spooked them before I got there, or they busted me before the loop. Did see some cool birds, a scarlet tanager, a rose breasted grosbeak, and a rufous sided towhee, and countless other I couldn't identify. Maybe I should have payed more attention to the ground birds I was after.

Think I will try it again in the morning. I like that short rye on a cold morning. May have to set up and actually call. I just think these birds have heard it all :o

Sounds like good and memorable days, just without the dead bird. Sounds like you're getting on them and are close. Just a matter of time.

Never saw or heard a turkey this morning. Turkeys 4, Me 0

This piece of state land in Holly is incredible habitat. Turns out it is a joint improvement project between NWTF and our DNR.

As I sat there at sun up I saw another rose breasted grosbeak, then 10 minutes later a rufous sided towhee about 10 yards from my boot. Then I sat there for almost an hour, which is a record for me. I could not believe a tom did not hit the short rye and want to get shot in the face after how heavy the dew was.

So I took my walk around, couldn't find a tom, a hen, a mushroom, but did find a scarlet tanager on the way back. Couldn't find anything to eat so I went home to cut strips.

Try hitting the fields around noon and in the evening. If It's like where I hunt the birds are super call shy n decoy shy. You need a super realistic decoy. Set up where they feed n don't call. The birds around here usually hit the fields at noon n about 7-7:30 pm. I've killed almost all of my public gobblers in the evening hunting them like deer.
