Do the cold temperatures change the breeding a

Unread postby northeast beast » Tue Apr 17, 2018 12:58 pm

Record weather we are having here in the northeast  as is much of the country. Season is 2 weeks out and I am wondering what snow and freezing temp does for breeding cycle. Everyone is hoping the winter quits soon but we are almost 3-4 weeks behind so are these turkeys going to be just starting out to cut loose from flocks soon and start breeding cycles late like mother nature is doing or are these animals like a deer and temps do not really regulate her cycle? My buddies seem to think it will be a good year because they will be very active and traveling the next couple weeks because of the weather breaking

Wondering this myself since we have had multiple snows and very low temps in April

My opinion, may not slow down breeding but slows down the nesting cycle. Gotta have some warm ground and a place to hide eggs to nest. Don’t typically find nests here until a few weeks into green up.

Breeding behavior is mainly triggered by the increase in length of the days in Spring, but it is possible for temps to delay things a bit.

I have been keepIng up with the birds around here for the past 6 weeks and they are doing what they usually do this time of year. It is snowing now and I heard gobbling around 12:15 today. I doubt it will change much. As others have said the toms might be henned up a little longer.

Our opener was yesterday and judging by all the kills i've seen already on FaceBook i'd say they are acting normally despite the cold weather. Lots of birds going down! I'll be out tomorrow hoping to do the same 8-)
