Southern Wi. When should gobblers start gobbling

Unread postby stash59 » Fri Mar 02, 2018 10:44 am

So when can we expect to start hearing the first gobbles? Will these be mainly early morning?

I hear them quite often while scouting usually starting mid-late March.

I have been hearing them consistently, on the roost, for about a week in Ohio.

Surprisingly usually mid-late afternoon. Don’t scout mornings much.

I would expect consistent gobbling to start within the next week or so. I drive almost daily between Milwaukee and Madison and boy have the turkeys been out big time this week! Bachelor groups of toms everywhere.

How often do you hear/see sign out in the marsh? I know you go in pretty deep most of the time.

I was speaking more of the State Forest. However I have found turkeys on remote marsh islands 2 miles from access points. Seems they live on the bigger islands year round. Darn big gobblers too.

Heard a few, 3 weeks ago in SW Wisconsin while we were coyote hunting. They were hammering pretty good in the morning, it was a pretty warm out. We heard another one Wednesday night at dusk before we were packing up.

This year in the fall I was staking out a bed in a thick nasty swamp and I had a flock of hens walk through the water right out to me....I was shocked to see them maneuver through that tick swamp. I'm doubting they will be there in spring though as there are not many high spots to nest
