Smoke Phase Turkey

Unread postby Lastcast#1 » Thu Apr 13, 2017 1:38 pm

While I was driving around this morning before work keeping tabs a few a Toms, I saw a white, gray and black Tom crossing a road..Man what a beautiful turkey. First time I have ever seen a turkey like this..Only my second turkey season so I havent really paid this close attention to turkeys in the past. Smoke phase...Cool...Took a terrible pic so I wont bother posting..

I guess they may be fairly rare? For the guys here with many more seasons , have you seen one? Killed one?
Just curious..If he keeps doing what hes doing until Monday I may get a crack at him..

Good luck to all..

Chad

I have seen one smoke phase hen, never a gobbler, in 16 or so years of seriously hunting them. They are more common in certain pockets of areas than others. As are multiple beards it seems.
Best of luck with him! I've never had one mounted, but I would definitely get a mount made of a smoke phase gobbler 8-)

Smokey Gray hens are rare.....toms are really rare. As far as grays go I've seen 4-5 hens and only two toms in my 20-some years of hunting.

Pretty rare. I had one pic on a trail cam of a hen several years ago but never saw her.

This link is to one that was posted the other day on a MS forum I frequent. I'd be dropping a load of cash to the taxidermist if I'd come upon this bird. :o

I see them down the road from my house every year. My buddy and I hunt the same flock on neighboring properties from where I see them but we have not shot any while hunting. He could have taken one a couple years back but it was a hen, and we can't shoot hens in spring turkey in Michigan. All the ones I see from the road seem to be hens, I have never seen any fanning.

I'd rather have that bird to my credit than a 150" buck, absolutely one of a kind!
